About the Position: This position is located in Optometry, Flight and Missile Medicine, Directorate of Medicine. Nellis Air Force Base is located approximately 8 miles northeast of downtown Las Vegas. It is a major focal point for advanced combat aviation training.

Duties
Conduct and document basic visual screening tests including, but not limited to, entry visual acuities, intraocular pressure, and assist in ophthalmic patient treatment.
Conduct advanced ophthalmic clinic duties to include special programs such as contact lens, individual medical readiness, ballistic eyewear protection, laser injury, and corneal refractive surgery.
Conduct tests including auto refraction, corneal topography, visual acuity assessments, and non-contact optometry.
Conduct visual assessment of laser injuries to include pupils, color vision, stereopis, distance and near visual acuity, amsler grid, and Ocular Coherence Tomographies.
Record current lens prescription, keratometry, past medical and ophthalmic history, family medical history, allergy history, subjective and objective findings and assessment/plan in the patient's electronic medical record.
Dispense eyewear and contact lens to patients, instructing on wear and care.
Educate patients on the Authorized Protective Eyewear List (APEL) and coordinate with Unit Deployment Managers (UDMs) to validate that issued ballistic eyewear are compatible with the patient’s prescription inserts.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Personnel Security investigation required.
- This position has specific initial background investigation and periodic re-verification requirements since its duties require interaction with children and youth under the age of eighteen (18) years of age on a recurring basis.
- Must possess and maintain current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS).
- Must have vision in both eyes corrected to at least 20/30 in each eye and must not have a detectable central scotoma in either eye with best acuity.
- This position has been designated as a Testing Designated Position. Employee must pass initial and periodic short notice drug testing.
- Must be certified as an ophthalmic assistant or higher level from a national ophthalmic association (AOA, ABO, and JCAHPO).
- Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes operating optometry equipment to conduct standardized tests to include visual, optical and diagnostic tests. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
