About the Position: Serve as a Laborer with the US Army Corps of Engineers, duty location is the Detroit Project Office at Historic Fort Wayne in Deroit, MI.
This is a Temporary appointment and may be extended up to a max of five years, and MAY BE made permanent without further competition. Seasonal work schedule typically will be May-October, and will be placed on LWOP during November-April timeframe.
Duties
Assist with boundary maintenance work to include, cutting brush, marking and painting boundary lines.
Performs maintenance work in connection with Project Harbors, Confined Disposal Facilities, and related facilities.
Follows safety rules and supervisor’s instructions on work sequence, procedures, method and deadlines to be met.
Makes independent judgments and decisions within the framework of oral or written instructions.
Performs paint preparation and paints, lift various types of weights, cuts construction materials, clears and grubs vegetation, and general landscaping using powered lawn mowers.
Utilizes various power tools such as pressure washers, paint sprayers, circular saws, sanders, drill presses, etc.
Performs manual labor such as forming and placing concrete, saw cutting, power drilling, ditch digging, and relocation of sand, gravel or fill.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Incumbent is required to take a pre-employment and annual physical.
- This position is covered by the civilian drug abuse testing program. Incumbent is required to sign a DA Form 5019-R.
- Position requires incumbent to obtain/maintain a state-issued driver's license.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Laborer without more than normal supervision. I have the ability to perform the most difficult and complex manual labor tasks to trade or craftwork. I am skilled in weight-handling devices such as electric hand trucks or lifts, pallet jacks and dollies to move very heavy loads. I have completed assignments involving several familiar processes which require remembering directions and/or sequences (e.g., paint preparation and painting, cutting of construction materials, mixing cement or asphalt to repair walkways, clearing and grubbing of vegetation, and general landscaping). I am considered an expert and work with a high degree of independence. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.
PHYSICAL EFFORT: Work requires the exertion of very heavy physical effort frequently involving the lifting and moving of objects weighing over 50 pounds. Work requires considerable walking, bending and stooping, and some climbing for short distances.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Works outside in all kinds of weather, and inside in areas that may be dusty, drafty, and noisy. Equipment, tools, and tasks involved at this level frequently require special care to avoid serious injuries. Work on and around river or lake structures involves hazards of falling and drowning. Work requires continuous standing, walking, and stooping.
