The Medical Instrument Technician (Cardiac Catheterization) position is located at the Durham, NC VA Medical Center. The incumbent will primarily be assigned to the Cardiac Catheterization Lab. This position provides technical assistance to the Cardiologist during all procedures occurring in the Catheterization Lab.

Duties

The Cardiac Catheterization Technician (MIT) functions proficiently and as a full member in all aspects of the Cardiovascular Laboratory. They scrub, circulate, monitor, and operate equipment on the most complex examination and treatment procedures including procedures such as endocardial biopsy, radiofrequency ablation procedures, and intra-aortic balloon pump therapy for very critical patients. They assure medications are properly labeled and available for physician administration. They have a functional knowledge of the cardiac medications use, appropriate doses, and side effects. They assist with training and mentoring other technicians, nurses, nursing students, and cardiology fellows. They work with the physician to complete both diagnostic and interventional invasive cardiac procedures including: LHC, RHC, PTCAs, Stent placement, IABP, IVUS, pressure wires, pericardiocentesis, temporary pacemakers, radial artery procedures, peripheral procedures, permanent pacemaker placement and AICD placement. Monitors the progression of procedures requiring independent judgment and anticipate need to provide specific instruments and/or catheters. The Cardiac Catheterization Technician has the intimate knowledge of vascular and coronary anatomy and physiology related to cardiovascular function. They are responsible for adhering to all departmental, service, hospital, agency, and national regulations and policies. The Cardiac Catherization Technician executes position responsibilities that demonstrate leadership, experience, and creative approaches to managing complex systems including the following: 1.Ability to scrub, circulate, and monitor advanced procedures (including electrophysiological) to include rotoblator, intravascular ultrasound, wave-wire, angiojet, filter wires, myocardial biopsies, electrophysiology studies and ablations, permanent pacemaker insertions, AICD, ability to assist with insertion of temporary transvenous pacemaker catheters. 2.Advanced knowledge of equipment, medications, and supplies used in the Cardiovascular Laboratory. 3.Ability to set-up, calibrate, operate, and trouble-shoot equipment. 4.Knowledge and understanding of wave forms from the great vessels and all chambers of the heart. 5.Ability to recognize and distinguish wave forms normal from abnormal, artifact from abnormality, and forewarn the physician of an impending life-threatening situation. 6.Knowledge of quality control and performance improvement indicators for the Cardiovascular Lab. 7.Ability to prepare and analyze quality control of test results. 8.Stocks rooms and monitors inventory PAR levels and notify to re order. 9.Checks expiration dates of lab stock weekly. 10.Assists with patient transport to and from Cardiovascular Lab. 11.Enters data in daily logs, event capture, CPRS, Philips systems, XPER System, Xcelera archives, and other clinical applications as needed. 12.Sets up for procedures including ACIST power injector, MAC Lab/Cardio-Lab, ablation systems, oxygen consumption computer and other clinical assist devices. Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education. There are no specific educational requirements for this occupation. Education may be substituted for experience only at the GS-4 and GS-5 levels. See the grade requirements part of this standard for information regarding educational substitutions. Licensure or Certification. Licensure or Certification is not required for this occupation; however, it is strongly desirable at GS-6 or above as evidence of possession of the essential knowledge, skills, and abilities. For certain functional areas at the higher levels or supervisory assignments, specific certifications appropriate to the specialty are indicated in this standard under "Titles and Certification/Registrations". For all specialties identified in this standard, Basic and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (BCLS )certifications are desirable. Training which does not result in official certification does not meet this definition. Physical Requirements. See VA Directive and Handbook 5019. English Language Proficiency: Medical Instrument Technicians must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Handbook 5005. Preferred Experience: Minimum of 2-year experience working in Cardiac Cath Lab or Electrophysiology Laboratories in a 1-2 room suite. Expressed working knowledge of MIT role and responsibilities while working in a teaching environment. Knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the cardiac system and the delicacy of modern research and development tools introduced in the cardiovascular cases. Demonstrated ability to adapt to a highly stressful work area with a team approach to care. Knowledge of the computer systems, documentation and clinical assistive devices. Interdisciplinary work demonstrated by assisting in the set-up, take down and post care of the Veteran population. Preferred Certification RCIS RCES ACLS References: VA Handbook 5005/15, Part II, Appendix G27.The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-08. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is GS-08.
