The incumbent serves as a Motor Vehicle Operator for the Grounds and Transportation section of the Atlanta Veteran Affairs Medical Center (VAMC). The Incumbent provides driver services for the daily operations of the Hero Transportation Program for various transportation sections Grounds, The position requires Motor Vehicle Operators to transport passengers and cargo, in a safe, courteous manner observing and complying with all applicable laws and regulations.

Duties

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Ability to operate commercial vehicles requiring a commercial driver's license (Class A or B with a passenger endorsement). Knowledge of safety rules, regulations and requirements when operating commercial vehicles and/or passenger transport as set fourth by the DOT (Department of Transportation). Knowledge in conducting required daily vehicle inspections. Knowledge of vehicles with special purpose equipment. Operate pickup trucks, sedans, crew cab pickup trucks, minivans and buses to accomplish the mission of the Atlanta VAMC Transportation Program. Handles routine and special pickups from the lab, court documents and accident reports for government vehicles, pickup staff from the airport, surgical instruments and mail pickups from various CBOCs. Interpret road maps and judge road/traffic conditions to determine the shortest and safest route. Verify that repair, maintenance and preventive maintenance activities of vehicles are being accomplished according to VAMC, GSA and other requirements. Issues reports involving problems encountered on the route including reckless driver reports, equipment failure reports and any dangerous conditions that could jeopardize the safety of the passengers or other members of the public. In order to operate government vehicles for official travel, the incumbents must have and maintain a valid driver's license. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The incumbent frequently handles objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Also frequently works in awkward cramped positions. Occasionally lifts weights over 50 pounds. Working Conditions: The incumbent works in many areas that may he dusty and dirty and occasionally is outside in bad weather. He/she may be exposed to various degrees of temperature changes, noise, vibrations. noxious gases, and fumes. The incumbent is required to occasionally work at al various heights. using ladders, etc.
