This position performs work in a clinical (medical) laboratory in Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service at the San Francisco VA Medical Center in Oakland, California.
Duties

Major duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Obtains patient specimens using state-of-the-art techniques and equipment.
Uses various types of collection devises to insure that samples are collected in a professional and painless manner.
Verifies patient identity and uses computer system to retrieve and print patient collection information.
Assists in training newly assigned clinic personnel in laboratory procedures, practices, and techniques.
Prepares many types of specimens and ensures preparation for highly specialized specimens involving many steps.
Prepares all types of patient specimens for shipment to reference laboratories for testing.
Maintains the laboratory facilities and equipment, and controls supplies.
Maintains and controls laboratory records.
Assists or performs laboratory testing.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm

DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.
Qualifications
To qualify for this position, you must meet the following requirements:
GS-06 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service performing technical medical laboratory support work such as: performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings; or technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work that required application of the methods and techniques for the position to be filled. This experience must be documented in your resume to receive credit. ~OR~
Successful completion of at least one-half year of graduate level education (9 semester hours above a bachelor's degree) or an internship in course matter that must include courses directly related to the work of the position such as chemistry, biological sciences, hematology, microbiology, serology, etc. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. Transcripts required. ~OR~
Equivalent combinations of successfully completed graduate level education and specialized experience, as described above, which meet the total experience requirements for this grade level. The education portion must include graduate courses directly related to the work of the Medical Technician position such as chemistry, biological sciences, hematology, microbiology, serology, etc. and must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. Your experience must be detailed in your resume and transcripts required.

IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements: The work requires some physical exertion, such as regular and recurring walking, or bending, walking or climbing stairs to observe, collect, or record patient data. In many situations, the duration of the activity (such as most of the workday) contributes to the arduous nature of the job. In other situations, such as in a laboratory, there may be special requirements for agility or dexterity such as exceptional hand/eye coordination.
