Duties

You will execute operating requirements associated with maintenance, storage and disposal of hazardous waste. You will perform inspection, receipt, inventory, transportation, database entry, segregation, and storage of HW. You will operate, transport, and handle vehicles such as forklifts, stake-body, box, and vacuum tank trucks, and other lifting equipment to load and transport HW or other materials. You will serve as a member of the Spill Response Team with responsibility for containment, clean-up, and decontamination of hazardous, non-hazardous, and foreign garbage spills. You will search for, read, and understand Safety Data Sheets to identify the hazards of materials and select proper Personal Protective Equipment to wear. You will perform sampling or field tests to identify unknown substances according to identification procedures.

  • You will be required to obtain and maintain a current valid United States driver’s license.
  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain a current 40-hour OSHA Hazardous Waste Operations Emergency Response certification.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain a current CPR and respirator certification.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • All new employees will be required to complete a 12-month probationary period.

Qualifications

This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. The Screen-out Element for this position is: Ability to do the work of a Hazardous Waste Handler without more than normal supervision performing the following duties: 1) Operates machinery such as power sprayers, oil skimmers, etc to extract and deposit chemicals; 2) Perform inspections to identify spills, improper labeling that may cause a Notice of Violation (NOV) from federal, state or local authorities; and 3) Maintains operational records of shipped or received waste.
