The DON is responsible for providing leadership and management of daily
operations, patient care and practice, maintenance and problem resolution of the Nursing Program, Public Health
Nursing and the Office of Manage Care. The incumbent facilitates the team concept in
decision-making processes and assures compliance with the
Performance Improvement/Quality Assurance Program, AAAHC, HCFA and Great Plains Area
requirements and identifies opportunities for client care and process improvements.
Duties
Supervises the work of Supervisory Nurse positions, Nurse Specialist, administrative support and other nursing staff through subordinate supervisors.
Participates with other supervisory nursing personnel in program planning; in continuous analysis and evaluation of nursing policies and procedures; in problem- solving matters: In committee activities as assigned and staff education activities.
Plans nursing activities to facilitate efficient operation, smooth patient flow, and availability of nursing personnel, assurance that patient's needs are promptly and adeauatelv met and required nursina services are rendered.
Responsible for maintaining nursing accreditation standards for the health center.
Qualifications

BASIC REQUIREMENT(S): Nurse Series 0610 (opm.gov)
Education
A graduate or higher level degree, bachelor's degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program is required. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education(external link), Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs(external link), Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education(external link), or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education(external link) at the time the degree was obtained.
Degree from Foreign Nursing School: Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (external link) is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools.
Licensure
For all grade levels and positions, applicants must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination(external link). In addition, they must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.
Experience
The work experience must have equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. At the GS-9 and above grade level, many positions may require experience in a specialty area of nursing.
Basic Requirements for the GS-12 (or equivalent) Grade Level
In addition to the mandatory license and education described above under Basic Requirements applicants must have at least one or more full years of professional nursing experience that is equivalent to the next lower grade level.
In addition, to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below-
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks:
Perform the full spectrum of supervisory personnel management to ensure the implementation and oversight of quality nursing care; enforces all appropriate standards including but not limited to those of an applicable health care accreditation organization; assurance that patient's needs are adequately met and nursing services are rendered in accordance with current standards for nursing practice; collaborate with medical and nursing staff on nursing documentation, analysis, evaluation and program planning including development of staff education and skills competence activities.
