Employee will serve as a Laundry Worker aligned under Environmental Management Service located at the Veterans Healthcare Administration in Hampton, Virginia. Incumbent will separate and fold linen into appropriate categories prior to delivering to wards and clinics. When assigned, he/she will deliver clean linen from the Linen Section to clinics and/or units according to established quotas and predetermined schedules.
Duties
Duties include, but may not be limited to the following:
Prepares and loads carts of clean linen for delivery to wards, clinics, and other areas; and loads carts according to established linen quotas.
Handles telephone requests for additional linen and maintains records of all such requests.
Performs all duties in accordance with station policies, procedures, regulations, and standards applicable to the laundry section.
Operates the flatwork spreader/feeder, ironer, folder, and stacker/conveyor; and operates industrial dryers, a small piece folder, and garment tunnel finisher.
Unloads industrial washers and operates lift stations, index switches, and rail sling systems.
Sorts soiled linen by classification and degree of soil and follows all established procedures.
Performs routine care and maintenance of machines and equipment (i.e., tightening nuts and bolts and/or greasing/oiling fittings and wheels); and inspects linens for damage, stained items, etc.
Maintains production counts and inventory records of all supplies.
Follows established safety and infection control procedures; and keeps the assigned work area clean and free of debris.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Full-Time, Varies based on the needs of the service.

"This occupation is currently approved for a Veterans Health Administration enterprise-wide Critical Skills Incentive (CSI). Candidates may be eligible for a lump sum CSI. The amount of lump sum CSI is determined based on appointment date and may be pro-rated as determined by the end date of the CSI. Eligible candidates will be required to sign a service agreement agreeing to an obligated service period and failure to complete the obligated service period may result in a debt for the unearned portion of the CSI."

Must possess ability and skills to sort linen by classification and customer, correctly identifying personal clothing, and maintaining accurate counts; separates soiled textiles into appropriate categories; properly handles soiled and infectious linen; separates, folds, ties, stacks rough dry textiles using power equipment; processes flatwork and/or finishing equipment; and operates tunnel finisher and auto-valet uniform dispensing equipment; maintains a neat, clean, organized work area to ensure productivity and efficiency; and performs routine cleaning assignments within the Laundry.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
PHYSICAL EFFORT: The position demands continuous walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, pulling, and pushing. The work requires the occasional use of heavy powered cleaning equipment (e.g., wall washers, industrial type buffers) weighing over 50 pounds. The duties necessitate considerable dexterity, hand, foot, and eye coordination, and concentration as well as visual acuity to see dirt, dust and debris.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is normally performed indoors with adequate heat, light, and ventilation. Some work may be performed outdoors where there may be exposed to varying degrees of heat and cold as well as inclement weather. PPE may be required in some circumstance as exposure to possible contagious diseases, blood and bloody secretion are inherent to this position. Care is required to avoid serious injuries (i.e., broken bones) when working on ladders, or when using 30-100-pound power equipment or handling hazardous materials.
