This position is a Maintenance Mechanic, WG- 4749-9 working in Tok, Alaska for the Tetlin National Wildlife Refuge.

Duties
As a Maintenance Mechanic your duties will include, but are not limited to, the following:
Completes repairs, troubleshooting, testing that can be accomplished by removing, replacing, tightening, splicing, soldering, and insulating defective wiring, controls, equipment, and fixtures such as broken and bare wiring, burned out switches and relays, loose connections and fittings, damaged light fixtures, and poorly operating thermostats.
Locates leaks and determines their cause and extent of damage.
Constructs, installs, repairs, and modifies wood and wood substitute structures and items requiring close tolerance fit and structural soundness.
Installs, modifies, and repairs new and existing utility, supply, and disposal systems and equipment such as sewage, water, oil, and gas distribution systems, and water closets, tubs, fire sprinkler systems, and showers.
Performs cement and concrete work on difficult projects, requiring more precise measurements and setting forms in curved as well as straight lines.
Operates various electric resistance welding machines such as spot, seam, and flash, or use a manual gas torch welding process such as oxyacetylene, to join a variety of different kinds of parts or components.
Performs the painting and coating work to the buildings and facilities by brushing, rolling, and spraying, using coating materials that are prepared according to specific directions.
Conducts maintenance on motor vehicles replace sensors, water pumps, spark plugs, brake shoes, mufflers, radiator caps, condensers, engine gaskets, a variety of belts and hoses, and complete assemblies such as removing old engines and replacing them with new engines.
Perform repairs on heavy equipment and machinery such as removing, adjusting, or replacing defective or worn parts and components.
Operates a variety of types of heavy equipment to push, pull, pile, or load materials such as sand, gravel and earth while excavating, backfilling, grading, or leveling earth to specifications on such projects like repairing and breaking new ground for trails, roads, canals, tunnels, or construction sites. Heavy equipment may include: bulldozers, excavators, road graders, skid steers, backhoes, wheeled and tracked loaders, backhoes, wheeled equipment/vehicles, and specialized equipment.
Plans and coordinates small to medium land management and earth moving projects within applicable specifications and requirements.
Operates a variety of farm-type tractors with towed or attached equipment on steep hills or rough terrain where there is significant danger of overturning the tractor or equipment.
Serve as a mentor for other employees and volunteers.
Keeps written maintenance records for all equipment operated.
Work includes developing a course of action to manage and complete facility and land management operations and earth moving projects to prevent injury to others and damage to the equipment.

Although no specific amount of experience, education or training is required, applicants must meet a minimum level of ability in relation to the position and the Assessment Questionnaire in order to be rated qualified for consideration. To be qualified candidates must meet any screen out element(s) listed at an "acceptable" level, and must achieve an average rating of at least "acceptable" on all of the elements. Only education, training, or experience acquired before the closing date will be considered.
SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The screen out element for this position is: At the WG-9 level, the Maintenance Mechanic in this position is expected to: perform a variety of trades (automotive/equipment repair, heavy equipment operation, welding, electrical, carpentry, and plumbing) to perform repairs, preventive maintenance, and minor construction of buildings, structures (e.g. refuge), and utility systems; use and maintain the tools and equipment of the trades, understand and interpret instructions and specifications of the trades, including blueprints; operate heavy equipment (i.e. tracked compact loader, excavator, forklift, backhoe loader combination, agriculture tractors with road grading equipment, etc.); follow safe work procedures to prevent damage and harm to equipment, property, self, and others; and interact professionally with other people.
Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, etc.
Technical Practice (theoretical, Installation, Repair, etc.
Ability to Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment.
Operation of Motor Vehicles.
Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprinting reading).

There is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions.
