The position is located in Acadia National Park, in the Resource & Visitor Protection Division. Location: Bar Harbor or Isle au Haut The typical seasonal period for this position is April to November, but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Anticipated Entry on Duty: April 2024 Open to the first 100 applicants or until 03/08/2024 whichever comes first. Duties

This position serves as a Park Ranger in Preventive Search and Rescue (PSAR) in any organizational unit within the National Park Service. The primary purpose of this uniformed position is to perform a variety of one-grade interval park ranger duties associated with preventing search and rescue incidents from occurring in park units managed by the National Park Service (NPS). Serve as a member of a highly functioning team of Rangers alongside fellow General Rangers, Protection Rangers, other park staff, personnel from cooperating agencies, and volunteers. Use computers to communicate electronically; use radios to communicate on a daily basis. Conduct patrols throughout the park's backcountry trail network via foot and throughout the park's front country and fire roads via motor vehicle. Educate Park visitors about a variety of subjects, including recreational opportunities, natural and cultural history of the park and its resources, hazards and how to avoid them, backcountry safety, preparedness, safe hiking, and what to do in the case of an emergency while on patrol and while staged at busy trailheads. Deliver Preventative Search and Rescue (PSAR) messaging to visitors. Communicate in-person via impromptu contacts, as well as via informal and semi-formal presentations. Respond to emergency medical calls as an EMT, such as motor vehicle crashes, litter carryout rescues, helicopter rescues; drive the park ambulance (if trained); conduct hasty ground search operations; conduct visitor assists, such as lockouts, jump starts, and courtesy transports. Assist with managing Division equipment, such as rescue gear, medical supplies, office equipment, etc.; and facilities to include an ambulance bay, equipment caches, the park ambulance, and patrol vehicles.

To qualify for this position at the GS-07 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: possess one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 level in the federal service. Specialized experience is experience performing duties for the protection, conservation, use, and management of natural and/or cultural resources in park areas or similar operations. Examples may include backcountry patrols to provide visitors with information and education to ensure their safety and safe use of park resources; report and/or assist with visitor issues/problems that may involve medical concerns; monitor special use permit compliance and threats to park resources; assist with park incidents/emergencies/etc. (you must include hours worked on resume). OR EDUCATION: Have the specialized experience, but I have one (1) year of graduate level study in directly-related fields such as natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. Course work in fields other than those specified may be accepted if it clearly provides applicants with the background of knowledge and skills necessary for successful job performance in the position to be filled. IMPORTANT - PLEASE NOTE: If you are using education to qualify you must document your coursework and/or degree completed in your resume or other application materials you submit. You must submit a copy of your transcripts, or a complete list of college courses taken that identifies for each course the college or university, semester or quarter hours earned, grade received, and date completed. OR COMBINATION: Have one (1) year of specialized experience or the one (1) year of graduate level study as indicated, but I have an equivalent combination of education and experience. For example: I have six (6) months of specialized experience (50% of the experience requirement, and nine (9) semester hours of graduate level college study in a directly-related field of study (50% of the related coursework required). (You must include hours worked on your resume and transcripts must be included) Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. CTAP/ICTAP: Current surplus and current or former displaced Federal individuals who have special priority selection rights under the Agency Career Transition Assistance Program (CTAP) or the Interagency Career Transition Assistance Program (ICTAP) must be well qualified for the position to receive consideration for special priority selection. Well qualified means that the applicant meets the following: OPM qualification standards for the position; all selective placement factors, where applicable; special qualifying conditions that OPM has approved for the position, where applicable; is physically qualified with reasonable accommodation, where appropriate to satisfactorily perform the duties of the position upon entry; and is rated by the organization at least at the well qualified level on all competencies. Federal employees seeking CTAP/ICTAP eligibility must submit proof that they meet the requirements of 5 CFR 330.605(2) for CTAP or 5 CFR 330.704 for ICTAP. This includes a copy of the agency notice, a copy of their most recent Performance Rating, and a copy of their most recent SF-50 noting current position, grade level, and duty location.
