You will serve as a Model Maker in the Industrial Operations Management department (6.3) code 6.3.3.2.0 of FLEET READINESS CENTER SOUTHWEST. This announcement uses the Certain Personnel of the DoD direct hire authority to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.

Duties

You will be responsible for providing engineering manufacturing expertise in development of the prototype. You will review project description sketches and aircraft (A/C) assemblies regarding triangular and geometric configurations with planner, engineers or other work order initiators. You will work from blueprints, rough sketches, incomplete drawings, photographs, verbal instructions and sample parts supplied by engineering. You will perform sheet metal work, read lofting data and build molds used in the sheet metal drop hammer machine.

Qualifications

This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible. The Screen-out Element for this position is: 1) I have the ability to perform common tasks including: Use computer-aided design (CAD) software to design aircraft structural components, subassemblies, and full working models; 2) Create computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) images of models and assemblies based on design specifications; 3) Planning, laying out, constructing, and assembling complete prototype models of end items generally related to Aircraft equipment and components; 4) Collaborating with the project engineer to determine the desired item's intended use, operational characteristics, approximate configuration, size, dimensions, tolerances, and the number and kind of assemblies and subassemblies; 5) Using welding, bonding, brazing equipment, and metal working machines to cut, fit, and fasten several metals together with allowances for desired moving, bending, and oscillating in accordance with design and operational requirements; 6) Developing and/or utilizing special tools, fixtures, and jigs to hold, machine, fabricate, and assemble items from synthetic material; and 7) Determining what materials and work methods are best to use by considering strength, desired life, location of component members, pressure, heat, stress, strain, etc. Additional qualification information can be found from the following Office of Personnel Management web site: Federal Wage System Job Grading Standard for Model Making, 4714 (opm.gov).
