You will serve as a HEAVY MOBILE EQUIPMENT MECHANIC in the Public Works Department of NAVFAC SOUTHWEST.

Duties

You will make repairs to a variety of heavy mobile equipment and vehicles which have mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electric systems, controls, or features not commonly found on automobiles and ordinary transport trucks and buses. You will trace and locate defects which cause hydraulic and other major systems to fail or not perform up to specifications regarding power output, lifting capacity, speed, and pressure. You will determine the cause of malfunctions and make repairs to a variety of heavy mobile equipment and vehicles. You will read and interpret instructions, standards, job orders, drawings, and blueprints to determine the overall inspection needs and quality checkpoints for heavy mobile equipment repair work. You will complete major repairs, overhauls, and modifications, and conduct functional and performance tests on completed work. You will measure, fit, and install components, such as pistons, valves, bearings, gears, and cylinders, to specified clearances.

  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.

The Screen-out Element for this position is: 1) Maintaining complex systems on a wide assortment of heavy mobile equipment and specialized equipment and systems, in accordance with mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic principles; 2) Determining the cause of malfunctions and making repairs to heavy mobile equipment and vehicles; 3) Measuring, fitting, and installing components such (e.g. pistons, valves, bearings, gears, and cylinders) to specified clearances; 4) Conducting functional and performance tests on completed work assignments. I work under close supervision of a work leader or journey level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed.
