This position is located in the Building Maintenance branch of the Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) Department on board Naval Station Mayport, Jacksonville , Florida . The purpose of this position is to perform a full range of carpentry tasks involving the alteration, repair, maintenance or modification of a variety of MWR buildings; construction of structures such as snack bars and items such as closets, benches, tables, etc.

Duties

Receives assignments from a designated supervisor, orally or in the form of work orders, which may be accompanied by drawing, blueprints, or hand drawn sketches. Accomplishes assignments with a minimum of supervisory guidance, applying accepted trade techniques, practices and work procedures. Assignments are subject to check during progress upon completion for adherence to acceptable standards of workmanship and compliance with instructions. -Plans and lays out work in accordance with drawings, sketches, blueprints and own knowledge of construction or needed repairs. Selects lumber, materials and supplies. Measures and cuts material to the required lengths and dimensions. Installs rafters, studs, sills, plates, braces, joints, floors, sub-floors, panels, siding, sheathing, roofing, building paper, insulating materials, door and window frames, and interior and exterior trim. Installs structural and trim items by nailing, boiling, mortising, doweling, and gluing. Planes, sands, and finishes completed work when necessary. Installs sheet roll and shingle roofing, insuring proper alignment and overlap. Fabricates and installs frames for windows, doors, transoms, and ventilators, shelves, counters, plywood duct work, bulletin boards, cabinets, bookcases, and related features having built-in characteristics. Insures that installed components are level and accurately aligned with other parts of the structure. -Installs floors and window sashes. Trims, drills holes and prepares items for attachment of hardware. Applies caulking compound or other filler materials around door and window casings and at other points where tight seal is required. -Uses a variety of hand and power tools in the accomplishment of assignments. -Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Must meet Federal Employment suitability requirements and successful completion of background investigation. Background investigations are conducted using fingerprint identification and completion of background inquiry forms.

  • A valid State driver's license is required to operate motor vehicles.

Qualifications

Qualifying experience must have been equivalent to the next lower level in the normal line of progression. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: A thorough knowledge of wood and wood substitute materials, and construction techniques. Skilled in the operation of general and precision carpentry and woodworking equipment and are able to produce finished products with precise fits, accurate dimensions, and acceptable appearance. Ability to interpret complex instructions, sketches, blueprints, and building codes. Ability to measure for layouts such as those required to construct footings for structural foundations and construct concrete forms and related structures with little or no supervisory guidance. Ability to use advanced shop mathematics to plan, compute, and lay out more complex and exact projects with features such as arcs, tangents, and circles. Skilled in setting up and operating the full range of industrial woodworking and related machinery such as routers, band and scroll saws, and drill presses. They are able to determine the proper grade, size, and type of lumber or wood substitute material for the job. They have skill in operating and using power and hand tools and other woodworking equipment such as portable drills, clippers, joiners, shavers, tenoners, sanders, routers, power activated nailers, combustion type saws, screw fasteners, drill presses, and table saws. Skill in setting up and adjusting stationary power equipment by checking and adjusting, for example, the "squareness" of the blade on a radial arm saw in relation to the surface of the cutting table. Skill in performing routine maintenance on equipment by lubricating machines, changing and sharpening saw blades, and by adjusting drive belt tensions. Ability to mill heavy lumber, cut bevels, rabbets, chamfers, grooves, and compound miter joints, and apply plastic laminates to wood and other surfaces on counter tops, cabinets, desk tops, and tables. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
