This position is located in the Nutrition and Food Service (N&FS) of the James J. Peters VA Medical Center in Bronx, NY serving as a Nutrition Communication Center (NCC) Associate, providing administrative and customer service support for the VA hospital food service program.
Duties

NOTE: This is a part-time position (_20__hours/week). The salary listed represents full-time employment and will be pro-rated based on the actual number of hours worked each pay-period. Likewise, benefits and time-off accrual will also be prorated and based on your part-time work schedule.
NOTE: This is a TEMPORARY appointment (not-to-exceed one (1) year). This appointment may be renewed for additional service in accordance with Agency needs for 1 additional year. Temporary positions offer health insurance (if the employee is expected to work at least one hundred and thirty (130) hours per month for at least ninety (90) days but do not offer life insurance or retirement benefits and may be terminated at any time before the expiration date. The appointment to a Temporary position does not confer eligibility for promotion or reassignment to other positions or the ability to be non-competitively converted to permanent employment.
Duties include, but may not be limited to the following:
Utilizes knowledge of basic and routine modified diets to identify problems in diet order information and take appropriate corrective action.
Interprets diet activity and patient information, to ensure appropriate food items on meal trays.
Verifies physician orders for unusual diets, conflicting modifications, tube feeding orders and nutritional supplements.
Assists with food selections, ensuring appropriateness of menu selections for complex diets.
Utilizes dietetic software programs to retrieve diet orders, recipes and menu and inventory data.
Utilizes a computer to enter and retrieve basic information.
Provides basic-level education and information on therapeutic diets to patients, guests and nursing staff.
Triages telephone calls from customers and/or patients.
Communicates with customers in a pleasant, friendly, personable and professional manner.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 6:30 am - 10:30 am or 3:00 pm - 7:00 pm

DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.
Qualifications
ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must possess at least one (1) year of specialized experience that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position, and that is typically in or related to the work of this position? Technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent to the GS-4 level in the Federal service. Specialized experience includes performing duties in food service in a hospital environment; knowledge of tray assembly area procedures; using dietetics software programs; familiarity with regular and modified diets; assisting with food selections; following verbal and written instructions; and using computer equipment, phone system, and printers. This position requires effective communication skills both verbally and in writing and good customer service.

SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE: Successful completion of a bachelor's degree or four (4) years of education above the high school level with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position (i.e., nutrition, dietary therapy, food and nutrition science, food service systems management, etc.). This education must have been obtained in an accredited business or technical school, junior college, college or university for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. One year of full-time undergraduate study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business or technical school. Physical Requirements: The work requires walking, standing, bending, lifting and carrying of light items, such as food trays, instruction materials, books and manuals. NCC Associate functions require long periods of sitting and moving about in an office environment, including repetitive motion activities of the hands and fingers for extensive keyboard and computer mouse use and office tasks such as answering and holding a telephone phone and writing. The work may require walking indoors, outdoors or to and from other areas of the medical center. It may be necessary to lift and/or push equipment. The employee is subject to periods continuous standing, sitting, walking and frequent stooping, reaching, pushing, pulling and bending. Frequently lifts or moves objects weighing up to 20 pounds and pushing loaded carts of trays and/or nourishments.
