About the Position: The U.S. Military Academy, West Point, NY is an academic institution located in the Hudson River Valley, 50 miles from New York City. The historic site is the oldest continuously occupied military post in America. West Point is a self-contained city with housing, a Department of Public Works, libraries, hospital, fire department, chapels, and restaurants. Employees have access to Eisenhower Hall Theater, Hudson Valley's performing arts center, and recreational facilities.

Duties

Teach an undergraduate philosophy course in the core program of the Department of English and Philosophy at the United States Military Academy with a strong emphasis on ethics and the morality of warfare. Instruct elective courses within our Philosophy major to include History of Western Philosophy, particularly Ancient or Early Modern Philosophy, or Non-Western Philosophy. You will support the personal growth and professional development of cadets in and out of the classroom as a role model for future leaders of the Nation. You will provide cadet counseling and support cadet extracurricular activities.

Who May Apply: U.S. Citizens and Non-Citizens with Allegiance to the United States. This is a full-time term appointment in the excepted service not to exceed 3 years.Term appointments may be extended beyond the initial term. QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must (a) hold a bachelor's degree or higher that included or was supplemented by major study in education or in a subject-matter field appropriate to the position, OR (b) possess a combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in education, or in a subject-matter field appropriate to the position, plus appropriate experience or additional course work that provided knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of the 4-year course of study described above. SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTORS/KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Applicants will be evaluated on the following: 1) Academic Accomplishment (PhD is preferred) in Philosophy. 2) Ability to teach core-curriculum course in Philosophy with a strong emphasis on ethics and the morality of warfare; and 3) Demonstrated potential to teach courses in the History of Western Philosophy, particularly Ancient Philosophy or Early Modern Philosophy, or Non-Western Philosophy. 4) Ability or demonstrated potential to develop master's level faculty. 5) Ability to mentor cadets and assist in their development as future Army Officers.
