The Health Technician (Operating Room) position is located at the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center. The position is located in the Surgical Service and will be performing duties in the Operating Room Section. The Health Tech works as a team member under the direction of the Nurse Manager, Operating Room or registered nurse designee.
Duties
The duties of the position include but are not limited to:
Working and communicating with nurses, doctors, and other medical and ancillary staff.
Lifting, moving, and transferring patients as needed.
Transporting patients to and from the Operating Room, Holding area and PACU.
Assisting with the gathering and returning of equipment and positioning devices.
Performing other ancillary duties as assigned (of a similar nature).
Assisting with set-up and reprocessing of reusable medical equipment (RME).
Obtaining and transporting blood products.
Maintaining adequate stock of supplies throughout the day (Mask, surgical scrub brushes, linen and OR solutions).
Maintaining daily logs, including temperature logs for all required equipment.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday; 9:00 AM - 5:30 PM

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 03/05/2024.
Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-5 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-4. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.
You may qualify based on your experience or education as described below:
Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-4 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Specialized experience for this position is defined as communicating with staff (nurses, doctors, and other medical staff) regarding the needs of patients; transporting patients, laboratory specimen and equipment as needed; setting up required medical equipment; and maintaining daily logs for the equipment. OR,
Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. Applicants have successfully completed a full four (4) year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree, with a major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to this position. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business or technical school, junior college, college, or university for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. NOTE: Transcripts (unofficial or official) must be submitted with your application materials. Education cannot be credited without documentation. .

Physical Requirements: Duties regularly require providing manual assistance in lifting and positioning patients, most of which are at stages of unconsciousness. There are extensive periods of regular and recurring standing, walking, bending, lifting, pushing, reaching, prolonged stretching and computer use. The incumbent must be able to travel to among different treatment areas with ease.
