Located within the General Medical Research Service at the VA Medical Center in Durham, NC, this position is part of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and VA Interagency Group to Accelerate Trials Enrollment (NAVIGATE) Program. The primary purpose of this position is to provide support to research investigator(s) and will function under the direction of the investigator on research project(s) opened under the NAVIGATE program.

Duties

***THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION*** NOTE: This is a TERM appointment (not-to-exceed 3 years). Term appointments are non-status, nonpermanent appointments of limited duration (more than 1 year but not more than 4). Term employees are eligible to earn leave and generally have the same benefits as permanent employees including health and life insurance, within-grade increases and Federal Employees Retirement System and Thrift Savings Plan coverage. Term appointments may be extended without further competition (up to the 4 year maximum). The appointment to a Term position does not confer eligibility for promotion or reassignment to other positions or the ability to be non-competitively converted to permanent employment. MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLDUE: Initiate, carry out, and complete NCI sponsored (primarily) and pharmaceutical sponsored (secondarily) clinical trials in accordance with the study protocols Prepare and assist with submission of regulatory documents Screen potential research subjects to assess eligibility for clinical trials Explain and educate potential research subjects regarding the nature and purpose of clinical research Meet and communicate with research study participants to ensure required phlebotomy, biopsy, and/or imaging studies are completed Communicate with the investigational pharmacist and chemotherapy nurse to ensure appropriate treatment is administered Instruct providers and/or investigators regarding visit-specific procedures that must be completed and documented Prepare and participate in audits, ensuring compliance with applicable regulatory bodies Conduct studies in accordance to Good Clinical Practice, and other required standards for human subjects research Manage subject compensation, to include maintaining compensation records, and preparing invoices for reimbursement, in accordance with individual clinical trial budgets Collect all study data (e.g., screening, baseline, follow-up) Extract and review data from research subjects' medical records Monitor data collection processes to ensure data integrity and completeness Collect, prepare according to study protocol, and ship samples (e.g., urine, blood, bone marrow, tumor tissue) to study sponsor, as required by specific clinical trials Collect, prepare, and transfer imaging files to study sponsor as required by specific clinical trials. Communicate with medical providers regarding available clinical trials, and facilitate patient participation Prepare memoranda and reports regarding the NAVIGATE program and individual clinical trials Organize and maintain all required study specific documents, including regulatory and source documentation Prepare and participate in meetings related to oncology clinical research and NAVIGATE Perform other duties as assigned Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm Recruitment & Relocation Incentives: Not authorized Telework: VA supports the use of telework as a way to help attract and retain talented individuals in public service, increase worker productivity, and better prepare the agency to operate during emergencies. All applicants must meet the BASIC REQUIREMENT: Successful completion of a bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree from an accredited college or university, with a major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences, or allied sciences, appropriate to the work of this Research Health Science Specialist. Display copies of degrees or course listings do not provide the information needed. - AND - In order to meet the minimum qualifications for this position at the GS-9 level you must also meet one of the following: EXPERIENCE: You must have at least one (1) full year of specialized experience (equivalent to at least the GS-7 level in the Federal service) that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of a Research Health Science Specialist, and that is typically in or related to the work of this position. Specialized experience is experience that demonstrates knowledge of clinical/scientific healthcare research; skill in data collection; recruiting, determining eligibility, obtaining consenting, and/or assessing research study participants; applying knowledge of guidelines for working with human subjects in research; conducting and administering structured interviews under direct supervision; and applying knowledge of computer programs including web-based programs and electronic medical records. ~OR~ EDUCATION: You must have successfully completed two (2) years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Master's degree or equivalent graduate degree in a field related to the work of a Research Health Science Specialist. This education must have provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Physical Requirements: The work is primarily sedentary, although some slight physical effort may be required. Typically, the employee may sit comfortably to do the work. There may be some walking, standing, bending, and carrying of light items. Some travel will be required.
