Serve as the laboratory supervisor and liaison between the basic science investigators and the Bay Pines VA Healthcare System (BPVAHCS) Research Service, as well as the lead research program administrative specialist for the Research Laboratory Program. May fill the role of Research Safety Coordinator (RSC) or support and work in conjunction with RSC. Manage the Research Laboratory, including all individual laboratories and the research core areas, and its administrative support services.
Duties
Developing, writing, recommending and implementing research procedures, reports, and policies to comply with current local and federal regulations and accepted standards regarding laboratory operations.
Developing and updating databases for research instruments at BPVAHCS as well as approved off-site laboratories.
Maintaining databases and coordinates with the Administrative Officer/Research and Research Budget Analyst the funding, acquisitions and procurement of instruments and equipment within the Bay Pines VAHCS and approved off-site laboratories.
Providing budget planning for laboratory operations to the Administrative Officer and Budget Analyst, and develops multiyear spending plans/budget proposals for the Administrative Officer and Budget Analyst.
Ensuring and documenting that all laboratory staff have completed all initial and annual training.
Maintaining and managing all laboratory regulations, directives, and standard operating procedures (SOP's).
Managing the security and safety of the laboratories within R&D. S/he coordinates all security and safety aspects with the Research Safety Coordinator, VA Police, office of Safety and Emergency Management, Radiation Safety Officer, and R&D Administrative Officer in order to ensure compliance with all VHA and OSHA regulations.
Coordinating the purchase, disposal and inventory of hazardous chemicals maintained in all Research laboratories.
Coordinating safety and equipment training of all laboratory staff with the Research Safety Coordinator.
Coordinating the planning and oversight of assigned bench laboratory space, and interacting with principal investigators in the proper establishment of newly assigned laboratory space to ensure proper use of agents, chemicals, and common research equipment. S/he also coordinates laboratory decommissioning.
Assisting the Associate Chief of Staff and Administrative Officer in developing short and long range strategic plans, budgets, program policies, and objectives towards enhancing and expanding Research laboratory programs effectiveness, efficiency and funding in a safe, compliant and fiscally consistent manner.
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM

Specialized experience: Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: responsible for overseeing and organizing the day-to-day operations of the Research Laboratory, including supervision and maintenance of all elements of the Research Laboratory Program (e.g. animal modeling, tissue and cell culture, cellular and molecular assays, biomechanical testing and tissue microbiology), protocol management, equipment inventories, chemical inventories, collecting, storing and analyzing data, and laboratory regulatory compliance. Supports the execution and expansion of the Research Program through administrative activities.

Physical Requirements: The work is active and hands on and requires some physical exertion such as periods of standing, walking, bending, and lifting. There is walking and frequent surveillance throughout the laboratory research building and between individual laboratories and the vivarium. Occasionally, there may be a need to lift small packages of 15-20 lbs. or to reposition research instrument with help. Fine motor assays requiring focused vision and technical skills occur frequently. Above average dexterity is also required to operate the instrumentation and manipulate chemical and test samples. The work requires willingness and ability to work in the laboratory environment with Biosafety level 2 pathogens, hazardous chemicals, cryogens and radioactive material are required. The work also requires animal handling.
