This position is organizationally aligned to the Escort Service within the Veteran Experience Office at the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center, Chicago, IL, and gives direction to the Escort staff.

Duties
Specific duties include but are not limited to:
-Distributes and balances the workload among employees in accordance with established workflow or job specifications.
-Keeps in touch with the status and progress of work and makes day-to-day adjustments in accordance with established priorities.
-Obtains assistance from the supervisor on problems that may arise such as backlogs which cannot be disposed of promptly and estimate and reports on expected time of completion of work.
-Maintains records of work accomplishments, time expended and prepares production reports.
-Instructs employees on specific tasks and provides job training to new employees.
-Reviews completed work to see that supervisor's instruction on work sequence, procedures, methods and deadlines have been met.
-Amends or rejects work not meeting established standards, refers to supervisor questions or matters not covered by standards and problems in meeting performance standards.
-Monitors working conditions such as seating, ventilation, lighting, safety, etc.
-Reports to supervisor on performance, progress and training needs of employees.

Qualifications
**Note: Health Technicians are required to have CPR certification. Training will be provided at the VA upon hire**
Specialized Experience: One (1) full year of specialized experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skill, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the Health Technician, position, and that is in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-4 level in the Federal service to qualify at the Grade-5. Examples of specialized experience include (but are not limited to): Experience providing appropriate escort assistance to patients and visitors; skill to understand and properly use of equipment such as litters, wheelchairs, IV-stands, etc.; skill in observing patients physical and emotional state of being; skill in maintaining and storing medical supply items and/or equipment; skill in observing and reporting on simple reactions and changes to the Registered Nurse; ability to politely and courteously provide customer service and relay information; and knowledge of infection control and basic CPR.

Education: Successfully completed a full 4-year course of education above high school leading to a bachelor's degree, that included study in medical, health, or related fields. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial, or technical school, junior college, college or university. One year of full-time academic study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university, or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business, secretarial and technical school. Combination of Experience and Education: Must possess equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience may be used to meet total experience requirements. Combining Education and Experience - Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement. One full academic year of study (i.e. 30 semester hours) beyond the second year is equivalent to 6 months of specialized experience. Transcripts Required.
Physical Demands: The work involves periods of standing as well as considerable walking, bending, stooping, stretching, lifting, moving of equipment and positioning of patients. The work also requires agility and dexterity to handle medical instrumentation. Walking, sitting for extended periods of time at a computer terminal, and standing at length while instructing is involved in this position.
Work Environment: The work environment may involve regular and recurring exposure to infections and contagious diseases, and potentially emotionally disturbed patients. The work areas is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated.
