This position is in the Maintenance and Repair Section of the Facilities Management Service at the Altoona VA Medical Center (AVAMC). This position is under the supervision of the Maintenance and Repair Supervisor. An Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic operates, maintains, installs, modifies, and repairs all facets of Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration work.

Duties

Major Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: An AC Equipment Mechanic operates, maintains, installs, and repairs all facets of central air conditioning plant, support and control systems, including the central air conditioning systems of many various independent roof top and separate outbuildings. Other responsibilities will include carpentry work, plumbing, electrical, and locksmith work as necessary. Operates, maintains, and repairs various facets of a comprehensive commercial Trane Tracer computer-controlled HVAC systems. Testing and treating of various waters in the central HVAC plants. Operates a centralized, multiple zone HVAC system, monitors gauges, documents accurate written logs daily (and hourly, if necessary). Records pertinent data concerning various systems on pressures, temperatures, etc., starts and stops HVAC system as needed to maintain a comfort level while utilizing energy conservation. Performs troubleshooting, maintenance, installation, repair, and preventive maintenance on various equipment. Properly uses and maintains recover/recycling equipment on all refrigeration systems in compliance with SPA, Section 608 of the Clean Air Act. Other duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Carpentry work as needed; work with journeyman level Carpenter to install, replace, and repair flooring surfaces to include but not be limited to vinyl composite tile, vinyl plank, carpet, and sheet goods. Work with journeyman level carpenter in hanging drywall, finishing, and painting. Plumbing work as needed; cleaning and repairs of disposal systems traps, sections of broken tile pipe, and leaky drains. Assists journeyman level pipefitters to make installs, modifies, and repairs new and existing utility, supply, and disposal systems and equipment such as sewage, water, oil, and gas distribution systems, and water closets, tubs, fire sprinkler systems, and showers. Electrical work as needed; demolition, installation, and repair of electrical systems. Common examples include pulling wire, installation and repair of outlets, relays, and switches; installation and maintenance of lighting fixtures; and testing circuits for completeness. Locksmith work as needed; repair and maintain a variety of standard mechanical/electronic locking devices. Basic knowledge of computers and computer operating systems, networking, and hardware to interface the many devices used to connect and program electronic locks, locking devices and electronic keys. Assist with snow removal in the winter. Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 3:00pm- 11:30pm Position Description Title/PD#: Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic/PD025560 Physical Requirements: The work involves walking, standing, bending, climbing, or crawling during surveys and is often performed in tiring positions. Work also involves carrying and lifting of some equipment. Some work is required form a ladder or scaffolding.
