This position is located at the Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center, Augusta, GA. Functions as Journeyman Locksmith within Engineering Service; the work is complicated due to the fact that the needs of patients dictate not only the priority of the work, but also the manner in which the work is accomplished.
Duties
Major Duties and Responsibilities
- Keys and rekey locks by using standard key coding practices to conform to organizational criteria.
- Work with a variety of equipment such as the locking mechanisms of alarms, timing mechanisms, sensors, electronic devices, and other related items which make up a complete security or surveillance system.
- Determine the most suitable type locks to be used in solving a variety of security problems.
- Inspect, maintain, repair, fabricate, and construct door hardware/systems.
- Plan and lay out work, as well as reshaping, finishing parts, and fabricating parts to close fits.
- Rework and refinish substitute parts and fabricating parts to close fit.
- Set up and maintain comprehensive records pertaining to locks, keys, core types, and
locations.
- Maintain knowledge of internal structure and operating characteristics of a wide range of makes, models, and types of common mechanical locking devices and of their working interrelationships with related components comprising the locking systems.
- Conduct investigations to determine if locking devices have been tampered with.
- Make necessary alterations to locking mechanisms and units to assure correct fit.
- Develop drawings or diagrams which identify necessary dimensions and special parts or
surfaces to be used in the manufacture and installation processes of all types of locks.
- Review drawings/blueprints provided to determine each type of lock for new construction
projects.
- Adjust, maintain, and use small hand tools such as files, tweezers, tension wrenches, as well as the adjustment and use of powered tools common to the trade such as key duplicating and coding machines, grinders, and stamping machines.
-Work independently and with management in determining the most suitable type locks to be
used in solving a variety of security problems.
- Select appropriate materials considering such factors as needed strength and
hardness, machining characteristics, environmental factors, and the extent to which the
materials used could complicate or hamper the use of standard neutralization techniques.
- Disassemble locks while closely inspecting them for tool marks, abrasions, and misaligned
parts which would indicate the possibility of attempted "break-ins".
- Utilize trade techniques to adapt locking mechanisms for uses to which they were not
specifically designed to hamper or prevent the use of standard neutralization techniques.
- Makes independent judgments in determining work sequence, selection and use of
trade tools, and techniques applied.
- Determine if locking devices have been tampered with and provide professional documentation to Police Service as required.

Physical Requirements: A locksmith seldom requires lifting or carrying of items weighing in excess of 15 pounds, but not to exceed 50 pounds. Is frequently required to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, and work in an awkward position when installing and opening locks and emergency exit hardware on-site. Excellent hand and eye coordination is required in servicing locks. Periods of intense concentration are often necessary when working with delicate and/or complex locking situations. Must be very thorough and have a high degree of patience and tolerance for frustration. Light physical effort is used in reaching, bending, turning, or moving hands, arms, feet, and legs to operate hand and foot controls of vehicles. Observes safety procedures to prevent damage to property and injury to self and others.
Working Conditions: Locksmith work is normally done inside in well-lighted, heated, and ventilated areas. Occasionally works outside in bad weather or in areas that are drafty and poorly lighted. Is exposed to the possibility of cuts, scrapes, noise, dust, dirt, and bruises. Drives vehicle in all types of weather and is exposed to the possibility of accidents. The operator is required to work outside and is occasionally exposed to bad weather conditions while loading and unloading vehicles. The operator is subject to cuts, bruises, and broken bones as a result of accidents while driving or when loading and unloading vehicles.
