About the Position: This position is located in the Anatomic Pathology (A/P) division, Laboratory Department, Directorate of Clinical Support Services, Naval Medical Center Camp Lejeune (NMCCL), Camp Lejeune, NC.

Duties
The incumbent is responsible for managing all daily surgical pathology and cytology functions, which include grossing of specimens, autopsies and ensuring completion of embedding, microtomy and staining.
Directly supervises the Anatomic Pathology division, Laboratory Department.
Develops initial and annual proficiency testing standards and ensure compliance.
Identifies training needs, arranges, or provides in-service training.
Develops or participates in the development of Anatomic Pathology protocols.
Evaluates new procedures for incorporation in the division and assesses the effectiveness of the new one once implemented.
Responsible for all elements of gross examination and sectioning for all types of surgical pathology specimens.
Investigation and resolution of problems related to all surgical pathology specimens.
Coordinates procurement of supplies, equipment, instrumentation, and other necessary resources and assures compliance with budgetary limitations.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
- One-year supervisory probationary period required. A one-year probationary period is required if the selectee has not previously met this requirement.
- Selectees will be required to sign a statement (Condition of Employment) consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption.
- This position is a Testing Designated Position subject to pre-employment screening and random drug testing. Selectees will be required to consent to participation in random drug urinalysis testing.
- This position may require the incumbent to work during irregular work hours which may include evenings, weekends, holidays, and/or varying work schedules.

Basic Requirement for Supervisory Pathology Assistant:
Degree: Bachelor's or graduate (or higher level) degree with major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. This degree must be from an educational program accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. (NOTE: MUST submit a copy of your transcript with your application package or you will be rated ineligible).

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: One year of specialized experience which includes managing all daily surgical pathology and cytology functions within the Anatomic Pathology Division which include grossing of specimens, autopsies and ensuring completion of embedding, microtomy and staining and applies the theories and practices of anatomic pathology as it applies to surgical pathology (histology), cytology, and autopsy services as evidenced and anatomy and skill to recognize pathologic abnormalities in a wide variety of gross specimens.

Education: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: Biology, Life Sciences , or Chemistry.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages.
