The primary purpose of this position is to serve as a Medical Technician in the Clinical Laboratory, with the duties of performing a variety of standardized routine procedures in the Laboratory Department. This position is located within in the Laboratory Department at the Crownpoint Health Care Facility, Crownpoint, New Mexico.

Duties

Performs relatively simple automated and somewhat complex manual procedures in Chemistry, Hematology, Urinalysis, Microbiology, and Specimen collections. Performs a variety of clinical laboratory procedures as requested by the primary providers for use in clinical diagnosis, patient screening, monitoring patient therapy and status, and other authorized purposes. Tests include glucose, glucose tolerance, blood cell counts (WBC, RRC, Platelets, WBC differentials, reticulocytes), microhematocrits, sedimentation rate. Operates and maintains clinical laboratory equipment ranging from simple to complex depending upon availability. Performs required quality control, quality assurance procedures as assigned and maintains appropriate records and files for documentation. Collects specimens for analysis. Processes and delivers specimens for referral to GIMC clinical laboratory.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. For positions requiring positive education requirements, or if you are using education to meet all or part of the qualification requirements, you MUST submit a copy of your transcripts or an itemized list of college courses which includes equivalent information from the transcript (course title, semester/quarter hours, and grade/degree earned) in your resume. BASIC REQUIREMENT(S): For positions at GS-4 and above: (a) Technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings or (b) technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work, that required application of the methods and techniques for the position to be filled. OR Education and Training; For GS-4: Successful completion of (a) an associate-degree course of study of which the 2nd year of the 2-year program included successful completion of a training course of approximately a year's duration in a certified laboratory assistant school approved by a nationally recognized accrediting agency; (b) 1 year of study that included 6 semester hours in chemistry and/or the biological sciences, plus successful completion of the training course as described in (a) above for GS-3; or (c) 2 years of study that included at least 12 semester hours of chemistry and/or biological science course work that must have been directly related to the specialization of the position to be filled. For GS-5: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects appropriate to the position to be filled. Minimum Qualifications: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings or (b) technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work, that required application of the methods and techniques for the position to be filled. GS-04: 6 months of general experience and 6 months of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-03 to qualify for the GS-04 GS-05: One year specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following types of tasks: Performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings. OR Successful completion of a 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study of at least 24 semester hours in subjects such as Chemistry, Hematology, Blood Banking, and Microbiology. GS-06: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following types of tasks: Monitoring results of lab sample analysis for deviations from the norm, performance of pathogenic microbiology, and maintaining laboratory proficiency. GS-07: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-06 grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following types of tasks: Maintaining laboratory compliance with accrediting standards and advanced trouble-shooting of erroneous sample analysis. OR One year of graduate education in clinical laboratory science or a related field. General Experience: (l) Any type of work that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work of the position, or (2) experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation. Specialized Experience: Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level. Examples of Specialized Experience: GS-04: With work being planned by supervisory and audited/reviewed; Experience collecting blood samples by venipuncture, heel sticks or capillary collection with supervision and few redraws. Uses venipuncture tube appropriately with few redraws. Processes specimens correctly with few patient call backs. GS-05: With some work being planned by supervisor and audited/reviewed: Experience collecting blood samples by venipuncture, heel sticks or capillary collection with minimal supervision and redraws. Using venipuncture tube appropriately causing no redraws. Processing specimens correctly with rare patient call backs. GS-06: Works independently with expert level experience; Expert in blood collections and specimen processing with rare redraws or patient call backs. Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP). You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement.
