About the Position: Serves as a Ammunitions Inspector WG-8 Target WG-10 for Crane Army Ammunition Activity (CAAA) within the Directorate of Depot Operations for Ammunition Surveillance Division.
This is a TERM Not-to-Exceed 13 Months. See "Additional Information" section for Term positions.
Duties
Performs a variety of inspections of munitions, components and explosives materials.
Opens containers, removes items for inspection, conducts visual and gauging operations, disassembles as appropriate and repacks materiel to required or original configuration.
Records inspection results involving improper marking, leakage, malfunctioning, contamination, and non-conformance to dimensional or electrical/electronic requirements.
Operates ammunition peculiar equipment in the workshop, test range or mobile workshop.
Setup, disassemble, decontaminate, and input design changes of Army Peculiar Equipment (APE).
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a SECRET clearance.
- This position is covered by the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Program. The incumbent is required to sign a DA Form 5019-R (Condition of Employment for Certain Positions Identified as Critical Under the Drug Abuse Testing Program) and
- must pass urinalysis testing, as required prior to appointment and periodically thereafter.
- This position is subject to the Lautenberg amendment to the gun control act of 1968 which makes it a felony for anyone who has been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence to ship, transport, possess, or receive firearms or ammunition.
- Civilian personnel of the Department of the Defense are not exempt from this provision. Therefore, as a condition of employment, selectee will be required to sign a form acknowledging understanding of this provision.
- Must obtain and maintain certification in Ammo-62 Technical Transportation of Hazardous Materials every two years andAmmo-43-DL (Online) Intermodal Dry Cargo Container/(CSC) Re-inspection) every 4 years.
- Must be certified by requirements outlined in AMC-R 350-4 - Training and Certification Program for Personnel Working in Ammunition Operations, and CAAA regulation 350-1 - Explosive Safety Certification Program.
- Must satisfactorily complete required hazardous waste training and refresher.
- Position requires a valid driver’s license.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a license to operate a forklift.
- Must be able to pass the physical examination required by the host NSWCC Medical Department and possess a medical certificate.
- Explosive certification is required.
- This is a Term position scheduled to last 13 months. A term position may be extended to a maximum of eight years depending upon the needs of management.
- Term employment is subject to a one year trial period. Employees serving a trial period can be removed with limited appeal rights.

To meet the screen-out elements' applicants should demonstrate experience with 1) applying inspection processes and techniques as it relates to munitions/explosives; 2) applying a variety of guidelines as it relates to munitions/explosives; 3) communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; 4) using basic computer applications such as Excel, Word and Power Point; 4) using precision measuring and recording instruments/gauges; and 5) interpreting drawings, prints and specifications. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

PHYSICAL EFFORTS: Ammunition inspectors frequently lift items weighing up to 40 pounds and occasionally in excess of 40 pounds. They may pull or push pallet jacks with loads of up to four thousand pounds. The work requires sitting, walking, bending, reaching/crouching, climbing, and long periods of standing. Work requires manual dexterity and mental, visual and muscular coordination.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed indoors and outdoors. Work areas are visually well-lighted, ventilated and some are climate controlled(heated-cooled). Workers are required to stand on floors of concrete, metal, or conductive compositions. They are required to wear safety shoes, eye and hearing protection, occasionally wear protective clothing including gas mask, respirator, butyl rubber gloves and aprons, cotton caps, and coveralls. They are regularly subjected to dirt, noise, fumes, industrial chemicals, and variations of weather and extremes of heat and cold. They are regularly exposed to all types of explosives, propellants, pyrotechnic items and compounds and other irritants (i.e., nitroglycerin, TNT, white phosphorous, red phosphorous, CS, CN and preservative compounds like PCP, PA and PB).
