The Health Technician positions are organizationally aligned under the Veteran Patient Experience Office at the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center. This position provides a varied range of supportive and direct care duties of patient activities. Current permanent employees of the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center and its outreach facilities including CBOCs and VCS employees may also apply to announcement number CAZP-12272191-24-FD which will close on 03/08/2024.

Duties

Specific duties include but are not limited to: -Performs patient escort functions to assist with getting patient to and from their appointments in the parking lot and clinic vicinity. -Assists Veterans with getting in and out of wheelchairs and at times, may use safe patient handling equipment to assist patients in and out of vehicles. -Assists Veterans by running errands between departments to obtain needed items such as prescriptions and prosthetic items. -Welcomes Veterans and Visitors to the clinic as they enter the facility. -Assist with answering questions and navigating the clinic. -Monitors all patient waiting areas and assists with navigation and escort when requested. -Takes specimens, requisitions, equipment or other necessary items within different areas of the Medical Center. -Assists with terminal care and transport of deceased patients to the morgue; removes soiled linen from the ward area and prepares vacated rom for terminal cleaning. -May take vital signs, weights, and pain scale, and notified RN of abnormal findings and documents data in CPRS. -Performs regular cleaning of clinic wheelchairs, bedside stands litters, commode chairs, and ward equipment as per established guidelines. -Maintains a safe and orderly work environment through routine maintenance activities such as ordering and stocking equipment and supplies and cleaning equipment. -Performs other related duties as assigned. Work Schedules: Between the hours of 7:30 AM and 8:00 PM. Various days of the week to include weekends and holidays. Work schedule will be discussed at interview. To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of the announcement. 03/08/2024. **Note: Health Technicians are required to have CPR certification. Training will be provided at the VA upon hire** You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: GS-4 grade level - General & Specialized Experience: Six (6) months of general experience and 6 months of specialized experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the work of the position or experience that provides a familiarity with the subject matter or is related to the work of the position to be filled. Examples of related general experience include (but are not limited to): direct patient care activities; ability to observe, perceive, use judgment, show initiative, and pay attention to detail; ability to take and record vital signs and other information; ability to politely and courteously provide customer service and relay information; and basic knowledge of infection control. OR Applicants may substitute Education for experience required at the GS-4 grade level: Successfully completed of 2 full years of study above high school that included study in medical, health, or related fields. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university. One year of full-time academic study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university, or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business or technical school. Education cannot be credited without documentation. Transcripts and/or Student Record Required. OR Applicants may also combine Education and Experience to qualify at the GS-4 grade level: Must possess equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience, as per items 1 and 2 above may be used to meet total experience requirements. You will be rated on the following Competencies for this position: Customer Service (Clerical/Technical)Infection ControlPatient CareTransportation Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements: The work requires long periods of standing as well as considerable walking, bending, stooping, stretching, lifting, moving of equipment and positioning of patients. The work also requires agility and dexterity to handle medical instrumentation with walking and sitting for extended periods of time at a computer terminal and standing at length wile instructing is involved in this position. Work Environment: The work environment may involve regular and recurring exposure to infections and contagious diseases, and potentially emotionally disturbed patients. The work area is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated.
