This position is located on a Forest Service Civilian Job Corps Center. The incumbent is responsible for the implementation of a comprehensive, professional counseling program for students assigned to the Job Corps Center. THIS IS AN OPEN CONTINUOUS ANNOUNCEMENT. Duties

Conduct initial individual interviews with students for the purpose of determining needs assessment inventories. Selects an appropriate combination of standard objective tests, administers, and scores the tests. Provides counseling to students in establishing career goals, investigating available educational and training opportunities, and helps the student make appropriate plans. Maintains a professional and timely counseling file on each student assigned. Conducts group counseling in structured group sessions. Participates in the coordination of the Mental Health program and meets regularly with the mental health consultant to discuss diagnosis, intervention, and provide behavior modification counseling to students identified as "at risk."

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the eligibility and qualifications requirements as defined below by the closing date of the announcement. This is an interdisciplinary position and may be filled in any of the job series listed below. Basic Requirement: GS-0185: Degree: social work. Must fulfill all of the requirements for the master's degree in social work in a school accredited by the Council on Social Work Education. Master's degree with practicum: Applicants who complete all of the requirements for a master's degree in social work that included a practicum are eligible for GS-9. GS-1740: Degree: that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours appropriate to the position to be filled in one or a combination of the areas described below. At least one course must have been from (1) or (2) below. For guidance counselor positions, a college or university-sponsored practicum in counseling is also required. Tests and measurement: Study of the selection, evaluation, administration, scoring, interpretation, and uses of group and individual aptitude, proficiency, interest, and other tests. Adult education: Study of the adult as a learner, teaching-learning theories for adults, models and procedures for planning, designing, managing, and evaluating adult learning activities. Educational program administration: Study of the foundation and methods in organizing for adult and continuing education programs. Curriculum development or design: Study of the principles and techniques for development of curricula for adult or vocational education programs. Teaching methods: Study of teaching strategies and learning styles of the adult learner. Guidance and counseling: Study of the purposes and methods in counseling and guidance, the role of the counselor in various settings, approaches to counseling, and the uses of tests in the counseling situation. Career planning: Study of career development, learning activities, systems, approaches, program coordination, use of educational and community resources, and vocational counseling systems. Occupational information: Study of theories of occupational choice and vocational development and their application to the guidance process. Identification and utilization of various types of occupational information and resources. In addition to meeting the basic requirement, you must also possess experience and/or directly related education in the amounts listed below. Specialized Experience Requirement: For the GS 09: You must have one year specialized experience equivalent to the GS 07 in the Federal service. Specialized experience is defined as two or more of the following: Assisting with the administration and scoring of aptitude and interest tests; and/or interviewing students to obtain specific factual data or opinions on specific issues; and/or counseling students under close supervision. OR A Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in educational counseling, school counseling, counseling, or social work WITH a practicum. The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university and demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work. OR An appropriate combination of specialized experience and education (only graduate education in excess of 18 semester hours may be used to qualify applicants for this grade level). Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
