This position is located in the Partners for Wellness Center, Division of Community Health Service at Shiprock Service Unit, Northern Navajo Medical Center, Shiprock, New Mexico. The primary purpose of this position is to provide physical activity guidance, healthy lifestyle consultation and specific fitness program, equipment orientation, instruction for the wellness center clientele, and maintenance of fitness equipment. Incumbent reports to Health Promotion/Disease Prevention Coordinator.

Duties

Serves as a fitness specialist and healthy lifestyle educator providing these services to individuals, groups, and families within the Northern Navajo Medical Center service area. Conducts health-screening assessments for all clients to determine if further medical evaluation is needed prior to beginning a fitness program. Consults with in-house Medical Provider regarding clients with positive findings revealed through the health-screening process. Designs fitness plans consistent with cultural, social, and physiological requirements. Monitors and evaluates the progress of clientele independently, able to make changes in exercise plans and intervention approaches in accordance with exercise science practice. Facilitates teaching and training of clients, staff, and community members to expand services and increase public awareness of diabetes control and prevention, as well as prevention and treatment of other chronic diseases via physical activity. Utilizes latest health, fitness, scientific and medical knowledge in providing and evaluating health and fitness services.

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. BASIC REQUIREMENT(S): Education: Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree: major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. In addition to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: GS-07: 1 year of graduate-level education or bachelor degree with superior academic achievement; OR, 1 year specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-05 grade level. Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Ability to apply basic principles, concepts and methodology of Exercise Science to develop individual fitness plans; conduct health assessments; apply appropriate educational principles and methods as it applies to physical education and fitness practices; provide consultation and training to clientele for a variety of health conditions; ability to apply safety and injury prevention techniques; ability to motivate; ability to collaborate with a variety of programs designed to address public health needs. GS-09: 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent degree; OR, 1 year specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 grade level. Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Independently applies basic principles, concepts and methodology of Exercise Science to develop individual fitness plans; designed primary and secondary levels of fitness plans; conducts recreational therapy; provides consultation to professional staff; ability to analyze and evaluate exercise scientific data and programs; prepare materials for use by communication media; ability to plan and recommend policy; provide consultation and skill in obtaining information from clients and analyze their fitness and translating into individual fitness plans; ability to apply fundamental sciences such as anatomy; physiology, and pathology. Time In Grade Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP). You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement.
