This position is located within the Agricultural Research Service (ARS), Plains Area (PA), at the Location Support Staff Unit in Manhattan, Kansas. In this position, you will install, service, and maintain refrigeration and air conditioning systems, and provide maintenance, repair, and preventative maintenance for a variety of equipment that uses refrigerant or heating/cooling systems.

Duties

Maintains and repairs plumbing systems. Repairs and maintains steam and hot water piping systems and valves. Installs water lines to include domestic water and deionized water lines. Operates, cleans, services, and maintains building heating equipment.

Requirements

Qualifications

In order to qualify for this position you must meet the following by the closing date of the vacancy announcement: 03/04/2024. Qualifications will be determined under the Job Element Rating System X-118C, Qualifications Standard Handbook. While a specific length of time and experience is not required for most Wage Grade positions, you must show through experience and training that you possess the best qualified level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of this position. Qualification requirements emphasize the quality of experience, not necessarily the length. The responses to the questionnaire and your resume should be in significant detail to provide the person rating your application with a good understanding of your ability to do the job, technical knowledge, work, and training experience, etc. (For example You must have the ability to perform the duties of a Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic without more than normal supervision (Screen Out)). Physical Effort The incumbent makes repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding, platforms, and other hard-to-reach places. This requires the incumbent to walk, stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions for long period of time. Close eye-hand coordination is required. The incumbent frequently lifts and carries up to 75 pounds. Occasionally, the incumbent may lift or move with assistance, heavy objects weighing more than 75 pounds. Working Conditions The work is performed both inside and outside. The incumbent is sometimes required to make repairs and maintenance in bad weather; in work areas that are noisy, dirty, dusty, and greasy; on scaffolding or cranes at heights of 9 meters (30 feet) or more; and in close quarters such as manholes, attics, or in grain bins. The incumbent is occasionally exposed to the possibility of injury from falling, electrical shock, burns, and rotary devices such as electrical motors. The incumbent is frequently exposed to the possibility of cuts and bruises. The incumbent is required a wear appropriate protective clothing and equipment and conform to all OSHA safe working regulations. Uncomfortable face masks and protective clothing may be occasionally worn when there is the possibility of exposure to toxic refrigerants or chemicals. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
