About the Position: Serve as an Animal Health Technician at a Veterinary Treatment Facility (VTF). Duties include examination, evaluation, and vaccination of patients; managing general clinic operations, inventory, and cash; providing radiology and surgical support; annotating and maintaining medical and radiological records for Military Working Dogs (MWDs) and Privately Owned Animals (POA).
Duties
Examination, evaluation, and vaccination of patients.
Determine vital signs (heart rate, respiratory rate, temperature, hydration status, attitude, etc) of animals presented for routine sick call or medical evaluation clinics.
Calculate drug dosage based on accurate body weight (converts English to metric units as needed) and administer medication as prescribed by the attending Veterinarian.
Maintain supply inventory at designated limits by monitoring existing stores ordering/receiving new supplies, ensuring that expired or outdated drugs/supplies are removed and replaced.
Restrain animals for radiographic study.
Requirements
- Must be able to obtain and maintain Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required. Are you willing to undergo pre-employment and recurring investigations as required?
- Position designated as Mission Essential which may require work or remaining at work during an emergency situation or when inclement weather has curtailed operations (e.g., threat to the facility, natural disaster, delayed reporting).
- Temporary duty travel (TDY) may be required up to 5%.
- Possesses current Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) or equivalent licensure, or is enrolled in an accredited technician program (within 6 weeks of employment) with a defined path to acquiring licensure.
- The incumbent is required to sign a DA Form 5019-R and/or DA Form 7412 “Condition of Employment for Certain Civilian Positions Identified as Critical Under the Drug Abuse Testing Program.
- Successful completion of a pre-placement medical examination to ensure the required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
- This position has a requirement to lift up to 75 lbs. in the regular performance of duties. Are you willing and able to meet the lifting requirement?
- This position requires the employee to use personal protective equipment provided by the employer.
- This position requires the employee to wear a uniform, scrubs, or other appropriate medical professional attire while on duty.
- The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.

Specialized Experience for the Animal Health Technician: One year of specialized experience which includes experience in performing technical procedures on canine anatomy and other animals infected with a variety of diseases; and support the work of veterinary medical officers or veterinary medical programs. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).

Education: One full year of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Animal Behavior..
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 18. Add the two percentages.

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-06).
