The Gastroenterology Technician assists the physician and Registered Nurse in the Endoscopy Suite. The technician maintains a high level of knowledge regarding endoscopic instruments, patient monitoring equipment, patient positioning and comfort, peripheral venous access, and proper handling of specimens.
Duties
Major Duties:
The purpose of the position is to provide support to the clinical staff, physicians, and nurses in the Endoscopy Suite. Effective interaction with the endoscopy team, SPS staff, laboratory staff, inpatient/operating room staff, Clinical Manager, and administrative staff, etc. is a key component in the provision of high-quality patient care. This position will include on-call responsibilities that commences on the first business day of the work week and ends on the first business day of the following work week. The member will carry a beeper and will respond to calls after the department closes during the work week, 24-hour weekend coverage on Saturday/Sunday, and 24-hour coverage on holidays. A typical on-call duty schedule will commence on a Monday and end the following Monday. IF a holiday falls on a Monday, the beeper pass off will be done on the next business day. The scope includes providing a wide range of tasks (patient care, use and care of medical instrumentation, etc) that contribute to patient center care and physician relief. BLS is required.

Qualifications
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Education: There are no specific educational requirements for this occupation. Education may be substituted for experience only at the GS-4 and GS-5 levels. See the grade requirements part of this standard for information regarding educational substitutions.
Certification: No certification is required; however, it is desirable that employees at this level have BLS certification.
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).
Grade Determinations: At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities related to the duties of the position to be filled. This would be experience which provided knowledge of proper performance of endoscopic equipment and procedures. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:
Knowledge of endoscopic equipment and use in basic and complex endoscopic procedures.
Knowledge of anatomy and physiology related to the GI system, with ability to recognize and report obvious abnormalities during procedures.
Ability to assist physician with specialized, complex procedures.
Knowledge of universal precautions and disinfection techniques and ability to follow SOP's to clean reusable medical equipment (RME).
Ability to collaborate, communicate, and demonstrate customer service skills and interpersonal skills with all healthcare professionals to ensure quality and continuity of care.
Ability to use basic computer systems and programs to record patient and endoscopic data, adhering to patient privacy and information security policies.
Ability to deliver patient care, including vital sign measurements and medication administration.
