This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Competitive Service Positions to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.
About the Position: This position is located with the U.S. Army Communication Electronics Command, Information Systems Engineering Command (ISEC), Mission Support Directorate (MSD) located at Fort Huachuca, AZ.
Duties
Make repairs, modifications and perform inspection on a wide range of small arms and artillery weapons.
Use test equipment such as voltmeters, multi-meters, power supplies and oscilloscopes to localize electrical and electronic malfunctions.
Preform the full range of work involved in the repair, service, maintenance and overhaul of any or all types of small arms and towed artillery; recoilless rifles; mortars; and their mounts, component parts and sub systems.
Determine the nature and extent of repairs required, disassembles and examines parts and assemblies for serviceability, replaces parts and assembles as required, reassembles, adjusts and calibrates light, medium and heavy artillery.
Diagnosis and locates mechanical deficiencies and malfunctions in automatic pistols, revolvers, shotguns, carbines, automatic rifles, submachine and machine guns, mortars, recoilless rifles, rocket launchers, other small arms and accessories.
Operate and maintain half-ton truck or scooter for travel to repair sites throughout the Post.
Train workers in repair and maintenance techniques.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position requires incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance, or access, for duration of employment.
- This position is subject to a one-year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.
- This position requires Temporary Duty (TDY) travel up to 25% of the time.
- This position is subject to the Lautenberg Amendment to the Gun Control Act of 1968.
- This position requires moderate to heavy lifting up to 40 pounds.
- This position requires the completion of a pre-employment, Physical Examination and an annual examination.
- This is a Term position scheduled to last 13 months and may be extended to a maximum of eight years.
- Term employment is subject to a one-year trial period. Employees serving a trial period can be removed with limited appeal rights.

However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.
Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Artillery Repairer ~ without more than normal supervision. I have the ability to perform common Artillery Repairer and small arms duties. I can assist with disassembling, reassembling, and troubleshooting issues with small arms and artillery weapons. Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.
To meet the basic eligibility, you must receive at least two points on the screen-out element indicated above and must have an average of two points on all the job elements listed below. Your application will be further evaluated to determine if you meet the best qualified cut-off for referral to the selection official.
Physical Effort: Work assignments involve standing, climbing, bending and occasionally, cramped and awkward positions. Continually handles objects weighing from 10 to 40 pounds. The assistance of other workers is available for heavier lifts.
Working Conditions: Works inside on concrete floors and on the outside at the firing range. Work is dirty and greasy. Injuries may occur due to falls when climbing and walking on slippery and inclined surfaces of large artillery weapons. Is subject to frequent cuts and abrasions when using hand tools in confined spaces and electrical shock (220 Volts). Exposed to excessive noise from test firing weapons; possible injury due to handling tools and weapons; dust, and fumes; and more serious injury from ricochet bullets and acids and when unloading jammed or misfired weapons.
