This position is assigned to Facilities Management at the Mann-Grandstaff VA Medical Center in Spokane, Washington.
Duties
EQUIPMENT OPERATOR DUTIES
Incumbent has the responsibility for the operation of:
Hustler tractors (with hydraulic steering and attachment controls). Attachments to include summer law mower deck, vacuum, broom, and winter snow blower. All controls, steering, transmission and attachments are hydraulic operated and connected.
Fork lift truck to transport various materials and supplies between buildings. Load and unload material from delivery trucks as required. (Requires forklift with less than 10,000 lbs. lifting capacity).
Motorized law carts with hydraulic dump bed.
Tennant street sweeper used for cleaning parking lots, streets and curbs using a combination of hydraulic brushes.
GSA assigned vehicles to include one ton 4x4 pickup truck, half ton pickup truck, eleven passenger van, and as required, various other sedans.
Operates a farm type tractor with a front-end loader and rear-mount drag blade to handle snow, debris and other materials dependent upon season and tasks required. Tractor is used to pull and propel a lawn sweeper attachment to remove grass clippings and other debris from the lawn and a three-point spreader to distribute sand and fertilizer.
GARDENER DUTIES
The incumbent must do seasonal gardening tasks and is responsible for the proper maintenance of 28 acres of landscaped hospital grounds, including soil preparation, planning, care of Lawns, shrubbery, trees, flowers and other ornaments.
Performs seasonal tasks as influenced by the season or environment. Assists in the application of fertilizers routinely used for grass, trees, and ornamental growth.
Lays sod, aerates lawns, and thins, prunes, or transplants ornamentals as required for a neat appearance.
Keeps the landscaped areas well groomed by mowing, edging, and watering using various hand power tools and equipment common to the trade.
LABORER DUTIES
Performs nonspecific general laboring tasks as required by the facility's requirements and/or as directed by the supervisor.
Responsible for snow removal from the roadways, walkways, parking areas and building entrances during the winter season.
Maintains sidewalks, roadways, and parking areas in a safe, neat and professional manner at all times.
Work Schedule: 8:00am-4:30pm, Monday - Friday

Physical Requirements: Incumbent is required to perform recurrent walking, standing, bending, and stooping. Employee must frequently work in awkward or strained positions while operating mowers or tractors around trees on hillsides. Occasionally lifts heavy objects in the performance of his duties. Moderate physical effort is required.
Working Conditions: Incumbent must work in various weather conditions, including extreme cold, heat, rain and dust. Duties require driving in all types of traffic and weather. Employee may be exposed to the possibility of accidents or serious injury while operating mowers and tractors without roll over protection on uneven terrains. May be subjected to noise, vibrations or exhaust fumes while operating equipment.
