Defense Finance and Accounting Services (DFAS) mission is to lead the DoD in finance and accounting by ensuring the delivery of efficient, exceptional quality pay and financial information.
Duties
The duties, described below, represent the major duties performed at the GS-06 level. The duties performed for developmental positions will be of limited scope and complexity to develop skills, proficiency, and work experience.
Receives and answers telephone inquiries concerning functions related to any one (or a combination) of the following: Accounts Payable, Retired and Annuitant Pay, Military Pay, Civilian Pay, Garnishments, and/or myPay.
Safeguards Personally Identifiable Information (PII) by verifying identity of incoming callers.
Interviews the caller to obtain necessary information to assess the issue and determine action required for resolution.
Attempts to eliminate misunderstandings, erroneous information and dissatisfaction discovered during the course of the call by explaining process steps, timelines and decisions or outcomes of the inquiry.
Incumbent consults regulations, policies and procedures sufficient to explain pay, billing and other types of financial procedures; referencing various technical materials; conveying options and resolving problems within automated financial systems.

- Please note, this is NOT a 100% virtual/remote position where work may be performed from any location in the US. This position is eligible for local telework near the duty station of the position, subject to management review and approval.
Qualifications
General Experience for GS-04: One year of general experience, which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position, is required. General experience is defined as progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work that indicates ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position to be filled.
Specialized Experience for GS-05: One year of specialized experience equivalent in level of difficulty and responsibility to that of the next lower grade (GS-04) within the federal service, which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position, is required.
Specialized experience is defined as: applying regulations, policies and procedures governing pay and other types of transactions sufficient to convey information to customers and other interested parties; explain pay and other types of financial procedures; convey options and resolve problems within automated systems.
Specialized Experience for GS-06: One year of specialized experience equivalent in level of difficulty and responsibility to that of the next lower grade (GS-05) within the federal service, which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position, is required.
Specialized experience is defined as: applying regulations, policies and procedures governing pay and other types of financial transactions sufficient to convey information to customers and other interested parties; researching customer accounts and financial regulations, policies and procedures to identify discrepancies and suggest solutions; explaining pay and other types of financial procedures or referencing and explaining technical materials; conveying options and resolving problems within automated systems.
Paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual, community, student, social) is qualifying. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience.
Education
Substitution of Education for Specialized Experience is generally not applicable above GS-05, but may be considered if it is
directly related to the position being filled.
GS-04: Two years of successfully completed education above the high school level in any field for which high school graduation, or the equivalent, is a prerequisite may be substituted to meet the general experience required.
GS-05 Four years of education above high school may be substituted to meet the specialized experience requirement.
GS-06 Six months of graduate education may be substituted to meet the specialized experience requirement when it is
directly related to the position being filled.
Equivalent combinations of successfully completed education and experience may be used to meet total experience requirements.
