The Lead Medical Support Assistant position serves as the Lead Clerk for all Medical Support Assistant (MSA) to include patient Service Assistant and/or Program Support Assistant (PSA) staff and is a fundamental role within the VHA Behavioral Health Interdisciplinary Team (BHIP) initiative.

The Lead Medical Support Assistant (MSA) position serves as the Lead Clerk for all Medical Support Assistant (MSA) to include Medical Records and ROI, Patient Services Assistant and/or Program Support Assistant (PSA) staff and is a foundational role within the VHA Patient Aligned Care Team (PACT) initiative.
Other duties include, but are not limited to:
The Lead MSA performs administrative work in support of inpatient and outpatient clinics such as the Patient Aligned Care Team (PACT) model, behavioral Health Interdisciplinary Program (BHIP), Specialty Care setting etc.
Familiar with the MSA related VHA Directives, policies and procedures.
Knowledge of patient eligibility for VA medical care, priorities for care, release of information, HIPPA laws and the Medical Fee Basis programs.
Monitors and makes work assignments, provides input on performance, resolves daily workplace issues and maintains efficient workflow.
Performs duties including, but not limited to: updating demographic information, collecting insurance for third party collections, processing patient movements, and scheduling appointments.
Must have a solid knowledge of multiple systems and current computer technology. Skills in compiling readily available data from prescribed sources.
Responsible for reporting backlogs, difficulties in meeting deadlines, etc. to the supervisor, to include recommendations and plans for resolution.
Schedules outpatient clinic appointments using Veterans Health Information Systems and Technology Architecture (VistA) scheduling options.
Possess working knowledge of inpatient and clinic processes and services.
Provide administrative support to variety of staff and other members of the interdisciplinary team.
Must provide excellent customer service and must adhere to VA local, National and Service policies and procedures.
Performs other duties as assigned.
The Lead MSA may be asked to participate in the daily teamlet huddles and weekly team meetings where patient care planning and management occur. Rotate to assure all MSA staff is in attendance and understand the process.
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday 7:00am-3:30pm. Tour subject to change based on agency needs.

Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).
Experience and Education:
Experience. Six months experience of clerical, off ice, customer service, or other administrative work that indicates the ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position; OR,
Education. One year above high school; OR,
Experience/Education Combination. Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable.
Certification: None required.
Grade Determinations: In addition to the basic requirements for employment listed in paragraph 3 above, the following education and experience criteria must be met when determining the grade of candidates:
Lead Medical Support Assistant, GS-7
Experience. One year of experience equivalent to the GS-6 grade level.
Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. Candidates must demonstrate [all of] the KSAs below:
1. Advanced knowledge of medical terminology and a wide range of clinical flow processes relating to access to care across multiple clinics, specialties, and/or community resources.
2. Ability to utilize numerous advanced patient systems in support of multiple clinics in an interdisciplinary setting.
3. Ability to organize work, set priorities, and delegate tasks/responsibilities in order to meet deadlines. iv. Skill in communicating with individuals to obtain the desired effect [and coordinating with a variety of interdisciplinary care team staff.
4. Ability to provide staff development and training.
5. Ability to manage staffing requirements, manage workflow priorities, and adjust the flow of work to meet team and patient needs. This includes the ability to follow-up on pending issues and demonstrate an understanding of the impact of incomplete work across multiple clinics.
