This position is in Pacific Southwest Region, Region 5, Mendocino National Forest, Upper Lake Ranger District in Upper Lake, CA. This position performs duties of a trails and recreation specialist and wilderness technician and serves as a first-line supervisor for subordinate employees comprised of temporaries, volunteers, and partners who operate and maintain campgrounds, cabins, and provide trail maintenance/improvements.

Duties

Assist with implementation of wilderness and trails maintenance program for forest use. Provide technical input on observed forest impact from recreation program use. Determine materials and supplies needed to maintain backcountry trails and facilities for use. Order materials and supplies needed to maintain backcountry trails and facilities for recreation use.

Requirements

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the eligibility and qualifications requirements as defined below by the closing date of the announcement. For more information on the qualifications for this position, visit the Office of Personnel Management's General Schedule Qualification Standards. Provide course descriptions as necessary. Specialized Experience Requirement: For the GS-09: You must have one year specialized experience equivalent to the GS-08 in the Federal service. Specialized experience is defined as one or more of the following: Assisting with developing plans for managing recreation resources, including recreation area maintenance, rehabilitation, reconstruction, and construction projects; Inspected the full range of recreation use permits for compliance with terms of use permits; Provided input for evaluating the condition of recreation facilities and determining materials and supplies needed to operate and maintain facilities. -OR- Two full years (36 semester/54 quarter hours) of successfully completed graduate level education or master's degree if the coursework is directly related to the work of the position (such as forestry, range management, agriculture); -OR- Combinations of graduate level education that is directly related to the position (in excess of 18 semester/27 quarter hours) and specialized experience. The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. TIME IN GRADE REQUIREMENT: If you are a current federal employee in the General Schedule (GS) pay plan and applying for a promotion opportunity, you must meet time-in-grade (TIG) requirements of 52 weeks of service at the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the position being filled. This requirement must be met by the closing date of this announcement.
