This position is located in the Logistics Service at the Edward Hines Jr. VA Hospital, Hines, IL. The primary purpose of the position is to ensure supplies and materials are distributed to all areas serviced by Logistics.
Duties
This position is located in the Logistics Service at the Edward Hines Jr. VA Hospital, Hines, IL. The primary purpose of the position is to ensure supplies and materials are distributed to all areas serviced by Logistics. Must have knowledge of applicable policies and procedures as well as inventory systems such as the generic inventory package (GIP), bar-coding, aseptic procedures and Logistics processes. Incumbents work within established shifts, which may involve evening, overnight, or weekend hours.
- Leads several GS-5 employees in the distribution area of Logistics.
- Serves as first respondent to any staff concerns related to supplies, equipment and procedures.
- Works independently to resolve issues.
- Distributes and balances the workload among employees in accordance with established workflow.
- Estimates and reports on expected time of completion of work.
- Provides on the job training to new employees.
- Answers questions of other employees on procedures, policies, directives, or other guidelines.
- Resolves simple, informal complaints of employees and refers others to supervisor.
- Responsible for the distribution of supplies and material in a VA Health Care System and supported catchment area.
- Maintains stock at primary and secondary inventory locations for all clinical and administrative services.
- Pulling stock inventory and material from main inventory for delivery, replenishing stock, and inventory.
- Interacts with clinical and administrative customers to ensure issues and needs are met.
- Communicates to Supervisor any concerns related to supplies, equipment and procedures, customer issues, etc.
- Monitors expiration dates, rotates stock and removes outdated items from use.
- Performs daily inventory of primary and secondary inventory points using bar coding equipment.
- Resolves differences between records and physical count of stock.
- Distributes items according to computerized inventory management systems such as GIP.
- Fills requests based on daily schedules of need or emergent basis.
- Completes specialty cart preparation and stocking.
- Cleans shelves and bins in assigned areas.
- Supports wall-to-wall and periodic inventories.
- Assists in other functional areas of the section as needed.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 03/01/2024.
Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-6 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-5. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade.
GS-6 Grade Requirements: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-5 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Knowledge of standard supply management procedures to perform work involving inventory and excess material management. Knowledge and ability to interpret policies, procedures, manuals, and regulations pertaining to supply/inventory management and federal acquisition systems. Knowledge of an automated inventory systems to monitor issues and receipts in support of stock replenishment processes. Knowledge of computers and Microsoft Office software programs such as Microsoft Word and Excel sufficient to enter information and mange supply inventory. Knowledge of item descriptions, medical and surgical terminology related to specialty clinical carts. Skill in effective communication concepts, techniques and methods both oral and written to communicate with a variety of internal and external customers. Ability to lead a team of supply technicians.

Physical Requirements: The work requires standing and walking during the entire workday, and frequent reaching, bending and lifting of supply packages (occasionally weighing as much as 50 pounds). Work requires pushing loaded carts of medical supplies (weighing in excess of 100+ pounds). With proper assistance, moves heavier items' weighing over 40 pounds.
