GS-04-The primary purpose of this position is: This is a developmental position with known promotion potential to the target position of Recreation Assistant, GS-0189-05. Incumbent works closely with the supervisor in performing duties identified in the full performance standard core personnel document/core document.

Duties

Primary Purpose: GS-05-To serve as Recreation Assistant in Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling's Fitness Center I or II in support of the Lead Recreation Assistant. Serves as a recreation assistant and maintains order and enforces policies, procedures, and safety rules for fitness center which serves as a diverse customer market. Receives, stores, and issues towels and a variety of recreational supplies and equipment. Ensures that issue slips are properly completed on all equipment issues. Assists in the physical conditioning programs by demonstrating equipment, methods and procedures to be used, as well as proper safety techniques. Collects fees, for services and resale merchandise.

  • Incumbent must be able to do moderate lifting or carrying (45 lbs.) short distances, and reaching above the shoulders
  • Incumbent must complete all mandatory training
  • On a as needed rotation bases employees will administer bi-annual fitness assessments for military person.
  • Performs basic physical assessment measurements to include height, weight, timed walk/run test and muscular strength tests (timed crunches and push-ups).
  • May be required to travel away from the normal duty station on military or commercial aircraft
  • This is a drug test designated position. The incumbent is subject to random testing for drug use
  • The work may require the employee to drive a motor vehicle. An appropriate, valid driver's license may be required for the position

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the general and specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, and Technical and Medical Support Positions GENERAL/SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least 6 months of general experience at the next lower grade GS-3, or equivalent in other pay systems. Examples of general experience include: Any type of work that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work of the position, or experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation. Examples of specialized experience include knowledge of fitness equipment set up, adjustment, and operating procedures. Knowledge of standard office equipment, such as desktop computer, copiers, fax machines and office automation systems to perform a substantial range of office automation support, along with the knowledge of grammar, spelling, capitalization, punctuation and commonly used specialized terminology to prepare material correctly. OR EDUCATION: I have at least 2 years of successful completion of education above high school that includes at least 12 semester hours in courses related to recreation (e.g., basic psychology, group dynamics, physical education, arts and crafts, etc.). NOTE: You must submit copies of your official transcripts. OR COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: I have less than the full amount of general and/or specialized experience described; however, I have completed some education as described. Therefore, I have a combination of experience and education as described. NOTE: You must submit a copy of official transcripts GS-05 Qualifications: Applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade GS-04 or equivalent in other pay systems. Examples of specialized experience incudes basic knowledge of a standardized body of rules, procedures and operations related to one or more indoor/outdoor recreation functions in order to perform the required activities in a fitness and sports environment. Basic knowledge of general office administrative and clerical procedures, and automation functions to support office operations such as answer telephone, maintain files/office forms, order supplies, operate a cash register, enter and retrieve data from a computer. A qualified typist is not required. Knowledge of a full range of work processing functions and the ability to work independently with little need for direct supervision in completing the assignments involving a sequence of tasks or processes. OR: EDUCATION: I have successfully completed a full four-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in courses related to recreation or physical education. NOTE: You must submit copies of your official transcripts. OR COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: I have less than the full amount of specialized experience described; however, I have completed in excess of the first 60 semester hours of a course of study leading to a bachelor's degree which is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirements as described. Therefore, I have a combination of experience and education as described. NOTE: You must submit a copy of official transcripts. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: Basic knowledge of a standardized body of rules, procedures and operations related to one or more indoor/outdoor recreation functions in order to perform the required activities in a fitness and sports environment. Basic knowledge of general office administrative and clerical procedures, and automation functions to support office operations such as answer telephone, maintain files/office forms, order supplies, operate a cash register, enter and retrieve data from a computer. A qualified typist is not required. Ability to follow written and oral instructions, and communicate effectively orally and in writing with a diverse group of individuals, using a high degree of tact and diplomacy. Knowledge of a full range of work processing functions and the ability to work independently with little need for direct supervision in completing the assignments involving a sequence of tasks or processes. Skill in the use of automation software arid related equipment. General knowledge of established safety standards and procedures. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
