Legal Interns will be expected to provide support to the legal staff, such support may include legal research, drafting legal memoranda and correspondence, researching legislative history, assisting in discovery and trial preparation, coordinating responses to requests for information under the Freedom of Information Act and the Privacy Act, helping to coordinate a variety of Office of General Counsel (OGC) program activities, and performing assigned administrative functions for OGC.

Duties

Duties will include, but are not limited to: Work one-on-one with Office of General Counsel attorneys. Develop and enhance legal skills. Legal projects and activities. Produce informal and formal legal writing and draft many types of legal documents for the office. Work in close association with attorneys and staff members. Conduct legal research; write memoranda, correspondence, and other legal documents in accordance with the applicable Federal administrative rules and regulations, case law and agency policy. Collaborate with attorneys and staff on various legal assignments that involve a wide range of substantive practice areas that includes, but is not limited to, federal torts, administrative law, federal grants, contracts, privacy law, employment and labor law, FOIA, procurement and appropriations law, and federal ethics law.

Qualifications

The legal intern must have excellent legal research and writing skills and be enrolled in an ABA-accredited law school in good standing. Students should be self-motivated, hard-working, and have the ability to work with a wide range of people. Someone with a strong background in national or community service who is comfortable taking initiative, and who has strong interpersonal and communication skills is preferred and encouraged to apply. Students must be able to commit to working 40 hours per week. NY-02 (GS-09 equivalent) You must be enrolled and seeking a degree in a qualifying educational institution on a full or halftime basis. You must have completed or will have completed 1 full academic years of law school by May 2024. You must provide an official or unofficial transcript with your application confirming enrollment, degree seeking and GPA status. You must have a minimum 3.0 GPA: NY-03: (GS-11 equivalent) You must be enrolled and seeking a degree in a qualifying educational institution on a full or half-time basis. You must have completed or will have completed 2 full academic years of law school by May 2024. You must provide an official or unofficial transcript with your application confirming enrollment, degree seeking and GPA status. You must have a minimum 3.0 GPA: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps VISTA) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Such experience must be clearly documented in the applicant's resume.

Education

Education for this position is a requirement and applicants must either possess a Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree or Master of Laws (L.L.M.) degree or be enrolled in a degree program from an American Bar Association accredited law school or be enrolled in an accredited college/university leading to such a degree. Applicants applying for law internships, must be a law degree seeking student/recent graduate.
