The Outpatient Pharmacy Technician will fill orders, dispense/deliver medications using automated systems or provide technical customer service to Veterans related to prescription needs

Duties

DUTIES: Duties: the major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Delivery of medications to floors/patients, filling medications for the pharmacist to review, checking for expired medications, answering phones with appropriate disposition, and assisting with basic inventory management such as putting up stock and identifying when medications need to be ordered Reads and interprets prescriptions, obtains proper medication or material in the proper strength and dosage form; determines proper amount and counts, pours, or measures the medications; affixes proper label; and records required data electronically or via the Pharmacy's copy of prescription/order. After a final check by a pharmacist, dispenses medication in a clinic, ambulatory care, dispensing window, discharge situations or via mail. Assembles prescriptions with correct drug, strength, quantity, auxiliary labels, and prescription labels for window dispensing and mail delivery. Verifies patient's identification following the Medical Center's policies (i.e. double patient identifiers), verifies that the patient receives the correct prescriptions by using VA software (i.e. VISTA and barcode scanning) Utilizes and comprehends the mail shipping programs used by the facility (i.e. USPS, FedEx, UPS, etc) for overnight delivery of non-controlled and controlled prescriptions Knowledge of principles and policies and procedures related to controlled substances and the requirements of the Medical Center, VA policy, State and Federal Regulations which apply to these drugs Follows all regulations, policies and procedures for safe medication distribution. Assures drugs and supplies are appropriately stored and secured according to USP and VA guidelines, including the storage of high-risk, look-alike-sound-alike, hazardous, controlled substances, corrosive chemical, flammable liquids and refrigerated items Performs inventory replenishment, inspection maintenance and security of crash cart medication trays. Documents all drug box exchanges properly and thoroughly. Perform monthly inspections to assigned areas to ensure proper storage of medications and soon to expired drugs are removed. Completes inspection reports in compliance with regulatory requirements. Provides pharmacy phone support with other departments and patients. Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education or Experience: One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade (GS-5). May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: GS-6 Pharmacy Technician (a) Experience. One year experience at the next lower level (GS-5), (b) Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. Candidates must demonstrate the KSAs below: 1. Knowledge of Federal and state laws related to pharmacy practice. 2. Knowledge of preparation, storage and distribution of medication products including those requiring special handling and documentation 3. Ability to use pharmacy information systems or operation pharmacy dispensing equipment. 4. Knowledge of basic inventory procedures. 5. Ability to communicate with patients and staff and direct questions to appropriate personnel. (c) Assignments. Pharmacy technicians at the full performance level may fill orders, dispense/deliver medications using automated systems or provide technical customer service to Veterans related to prescription needs. Duties will include delivery of medications to floors/patients, filling medications for the pharmacist to review, checking for expired medications, answering phones with appropriate disposition, preparing sterile products (when applicable) and assisting with basic inventory management such as putting up stock and identifying when medications need to be ordered. References: VA Handbook 5005/159, Part II, Appendix G28 The full performance level of this vacancy is 6. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of 6 to 6. Physical Requirements: This position physical demands are standing, reaching, bending, stretching, walking, and carrying light loads of supplies.
