This position is located in Department of Homeland Security (DHS), United States Coast Guard (USCG), Field Office of the Chief Administrative Law Judge (ALJ), located in Baltimore, MD.
Duties
The Paralegal Specialist will provide support for the Baltimore Administrative Law Judge (ALJ) in the processing and presiding over of administrative proceedings for the U.S. Coast Guard and numerous other federal agencies. You will review and summarize filings in a computerized docketing system; prepares and transmits notices, judgments and orders; and interacts with the public, including answering inquiries into case status and filing procedures. Special projects and assignments delegated include responding to Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) or record requests and processing FOIA appeals for DHS agencies.Being a civilian working for the CG makes you a valuable team member. Requirements
- Must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
- Selective Service registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
- Must successfully complete a background security investigation.
- May be required to serve a one year probationary period.
Qualifications
For the GS-09: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-7 level in the Federal service. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work.
Specialized experience must include:
Examining and processing a variety of legal documents; AND
Responding to legal inquiries from the public ; AND
Providing case management for legal cases; AND
Conducting legal research OR searching and reviewing legal references, case files, and other sources for information and data required by attorneys.
ORMaster or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree;ORLL.B. or J.D. degree, if related;OR a combination of specialized experience and education. National Service Experience (i.e., volunteer experience): Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.The Office of Personnel management (OPM) must authorize employment offers made to current or former political appointees. If you are currently, or have been within the last 5 years, a political Schedule A, Schedule, C, Non-career SES or Presidential Appointee employee in the Executive Branch, you must disclose this information to the Human Resources Office.
