These positions are located in varies locations within the Montana/Dakotas BLM. Information about each location and the surrounding area can be found by searching the chamber of commerce web site for each city.
We expect to fill one or more vacancies in each location at this time; however, if needed, other locations within the Montana/Dakotas State, District or Field offices may be considered based on need and management discretion.
Duties
Research files and records to obtain information about sites scheduled for cultural inventories.
Review reference material to aid in identification of artifacts recovered during inventories.
Determines inventory methods to use, identifies area to be inventoried, schedules inventory, and arranges for equipment, supplies, and transportation.
Prepare statements of work for non-complex cultural resource field inventories.
Obtains required permission from landowners, trains crewmembers, and assigns work.
Requirements

- NO GOVERNMENT HOUSING IS AVAILABLE FOR MOST LOCATIONS. Securing housing will ultimately be the responsibility of the selected employee.

For GS-05: You must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-04 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: assisting a professional archeologist to plan and carry out field studies to identify cultural, historic and/or paleontological resources and write reports based on findings; applying and adapting a wide range of established data analysis methods to fit a variety of circumstances with assistance from higher level archeologists; using GPS equipment to record or locate archeological sites; writing basic cultural resource reports with supervision.

Education: You must possess 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with courses related to the occupation.

Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate undergraduate education.
For GS-06: You must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-05 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: working with a professional archeologist to plan and carry out field studies to identify cultural, historic and/or paleontological resources and write reports based on findings; applying and adapting a wide range of established data analysis methods to fit a variety of circumstances; using GPS equipment to record or locate archeological sites; writing basic cultural resource reports with supervision.

Education: You must possess one full academic year of graduate education directly related to the occupation.

Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate graduate education. Graduate level education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position.
For GS-07: You must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-06 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: researching reference materials such as site maps, existing archeological inventory information, books and other written data for possible cultural sites within an area slated for development; preparing or assisting with preparation of forms for determination of eligibility and/or nomination of sites to the National Register of Historic Places; conducting field work for small projects independently with minimal guidance; using GPS equipment to navigate and to generate maps; writing cultural resource reports with minimal supervision.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Demands: The work is performed mostly outdoors in rugged terrain; to include very steep, wet, muddy, rough, uneven or rocky surfaces. The position requires physical exertion such as, but not limited to, driving over unpaved roads, walking over rough terrain or inclines, standing for long periods of time, bending, crouching and stooping, digging, hiking, lifting, biking, stretching, reaching, or similar activities. Work may involve early morning hours, night hours, or daytime hours and may require working on holidays. It can require carrying heavy backpacks, tools, rescue equipment, or other loads.
Work Environment: Most work will be performed out of doors, in all types of weather conditions, terrain, and elevations. Work may take place in an extremely remote environment and may require primitive camping and living skills for upwards of two weeks in duration. Indoor duties are performed in a normal office setting.

Applicants may qualify for these positions based on experience, education, or an equivalent combination as described in the Qualifications section of this announcement.
Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required above GS-5 only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. One full year of graduate education meets the requirements for GS-7.
