About the Position: This position serves as Marine Machinery Mechanic performing a wide variety of maintenance and repair activities for the Olmsted Lock and Dam project operations office.

Duties

Diagnose and Identify overheating of bearings, brakes and/or clutches to return equipment to operation. Assemble, disassemble, and make onsite repair to equipment and machinery. Oil and grease heavy machinery and equipment. Maintain current and accurate records of operation, maintenance, and shop manuals and drawings. Repair, lubricate and/or service equipment such as generators, pumps, and compressors. Operate auxiliary equipment including pumps, generators, air compressors and/or other boat machinery. Perform major maintenance and complete overhauls of machinery and equipment located on floating and land plant, and lock and dam equipment assigned Determine and maintain current and adequate spare parts inventory sufficient to maintain assigned floating plant in good operating condition under normal circumstances Perform journeyman level maintenance for mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic and electrical systems at a high lift lock and dam facility

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP) subject to applicant testing and random drug testing
  • Load Handling Equipment certification is required to be obtained for this position within 1 year
  • This position requires a valid state driver’s license
  • This position requires a pre-employment physical exam due to the physical requirement of the position (Lifts objects up to 100 pounds)

Qualifications

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Marine Machinery Mechanic ~ Perform a variety of installing, maintaining, repairing, overhauling diesel and gasoline internal combustion marine engines and other related equipment aboard floating plants. Successfully used power tools such as lifts, sling chains and/or rock hooks daily.- Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Physical Effort: Required to stand, walk, and climb most of the time in performing assigned duties. Frequently reaches, bends, pulls, pushes, and lifts in order to move/install/repair heavy machinery equipment. Lifts objects up to 100 pounds with assistance. Working Conditions: Works in inclement weather conditions and exposed to open river conditions when working on marine floating plant equipment and is subject to dangers such as wet and/or slippery surfaces, snagged ropes and cables, and drowning. Works in confined/enclosed areas such as spaces between bulkheads and decks and the proximity of machinery. Conditions are subject to exhausts, fumes, noises, and cramped/awkward/uncomfortable positions. Works around moving/rotating/reciprocating machinery where there is danger of injury due to falls, cuts, bruises, and burns. Various protective devices such as safety shoes, glasses, gloves and hard hats are used.
