The mission of the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) is to research, investigate, recover, and identify remains of Department of Defense personnel unaccounted for from World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Cold War, the Iraq conflicts and the Persian Gulf War, and to disseminate appropriate information on the status of missing persons from past conflicts to authorized family members. The DPAA Director, (SES-III) reports to the Under Secretary of Defense for Policy (USD(P)).

Duties

Incumbent typical work assignments may include the following: Provides digital reference and research service to large bodies of permanently valuable records. Plans, organizes, and direct the activities for the DPAA Records Repository. Develops goals and objectives to maximize both use and conservation of archival records. Provides advice, guidance, and direction on a wide range of digital and non-digital archival use care and administrative issues. Performs professional digital and non-digital archival work in accessioning, describing, analyzing, arranging, and preserving the records held and/or produced by DPAA. Manages the active use of repository documents and use an archival software system.

  • Incumbent must be able to obtain and maintain a TOP SECRET security clearance with SCI and SAP components. A Special Background Investigation (SBI) is required with favorable adjudication by a determining authority
  • Incumbent may occasionally be required to travel away from the normal duty station for official business on military or commercial aircraft
  • Incumbent may be required to work other than normal duty hours, which may include evenings, weekends, and/or holidays and/or overtime
  • Incumbent is required to sign a non-disclosure agreement

Bachelor's degree in archival science or bachelor's degree with a major that includes 18 semester hours in archival science, history and/or in political science or government, and 12 semester hours in one or any combination of the following: archival science, history, American civilization, economics, political science, public administration, or government. OR B. Combination of education and experience - at least 30 semester hours that included courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. In addition to meeting the BASIC REQUIREMENT, you must also meet the specialized experience requirements listed below. You may qualify at the GS-12 level, if you fulfill the following qualification requirements: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service (experience may have been gained in the private sector) that demonstrates your experience in: Developing and implementing guidance and structure programs to preserve digital and hard copy records; Managing a variety of archival activities such as reference, accessioning, research and planning control; and, Researching and advising on Freedom of Information (FOIA) request. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
