This Machinist position is located in the Engineering Section of the Facility Management Service Line at the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center, Chicago, IL. The Machinist repairs medical equipment and building service equipment as needed.
Duties
Major duties include and are not limited to:
Repairs wheelchairs, carts of various types, hospital beds, lockers, pneumatic tubing systems, dietetic carts, operating tables, patient lifts, IV stands, litters, and other medical equipment of a mechanical nature, and maintenance of other building service equipment installations.
Installs, maintains and repairs mechanical components of building service equipment and personal property.
Fabricates and/or repairs metal brackets, supports, mounting devices used in installations.
Repairs, modifies and fabricates parts and components necessary for the continuous operation of the medical center.
Repairs other equipment as assigned by the Foreman.
Operates a lathe, milling machine, and drill presses with sufficient ability to fabricate replacement parts for various items of equipment.
Uses acetylene and electric arc welders for fabrication and repairs.
Makes repairs, adjustments and installations from ladders, scaffolding and platforms where components are in hard-to-reach places.
Assisting the craftsmen and in their absence or when specifically assigned, performing repairs on other equipment and systems as directed by the Supervisory Foreman.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Working Schedule: Monday through Friday, 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM. Work schedule will be discussed at interview.

Physical Effort: The machinist frequently carries materials and equipment that weighs up to fifty (50) pounds. In transporting heavy equipment, a dolly or cart will be used.
Working Conditions: The work is done primarily in the Machine Shop where there is dust, dirt, and fumes. Incumbent is subject to high levels of noise, hot temperatures and working on slippery floors and additionally performs tasks in crawl spaces. The employee may be required to protective equipment and clothing that may be uncomfortable and heavy duty to protect their persons from danger.
