Agricultural commodity grader-student trainee assists commodity graders with conducting commodity grading and/or certification functions. Receives on-the-job training in the technical aspects for preparation as an Agricultural Commodity Grader for meat.

Duties

The duties described are for the full-performance level. The duties may include, but are not limited to: Performs grading and certification work, as required, to obtain the necessary on-the-job training. Under the direct supervision applies preliminary quality and yield grade designations to beef, veal, calf, and/or lamb carcasses offered for grading services. Applies, or oversees the application of the official grade markings to labels, packaging materials, and other materials identifying the product's quality. Examines several types of meat products before and after purchase and during processing, handling, and transportation Prepares agricultural grading and acceptance certificates under the supervision and discretion of the Agricultural Commodity Grader (Meat) to which assigned for on-the-job training. Studies rules, regulations, policies, and procedures governing the grading and certification of meat products.

Requirements

  • You must be a US Citizen or US National.
  • Individuals who were born male after 12/31/1959 must be Selective Service registered or exempt.
  • Must be in good academic standing as defined by their academic institution.
  • Complete at least 640 hrs of work experience prior to completion of degree.
  • Enrolled at least half-time at a qualifying educational institution.
  • A signed participant agreement is required for employment under Pathways.
  • Satisfactory Background investigation and/or fingerprint check.
  • Successful completion of a one-year trial period.

  • Commodity grading work requires the ability to work in an environment that has cold temperatures between 25-30 degrees, high noise levels, slippery surfaces, and safety risks near cutting and sawing equipment.
  • You will be required to lift up to 50 pounds and stand, walk, lift, bend and stoop for long periods of time.
  • Physical coordination and finger dexterity in both hands, healthy eyesight for color, distance, and depth perception, and the ability to use other senses for touch, taste, smell, etc.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement, including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below. ELIGIBILITY: Students who are currently enrolled or accepted for enrollment on at least a half-time basis at a qualifying educational institution in a certificate, degree, or diploma program. Applicants can qualify by meeting the EDUCATION requirements specified below. EDUCATION: GS-4: Completion of 2 full academic years (60 semester or 90 quarter hours) of post-high school study or an associate's degree.
