Incumbent performs technical, administrative, and professional work involving managing, administering, operating or supporting services and programs related to commercial healthcare interior design for the Ralph H. Johnson VAMC in Charleston, SC. The interior design program is responsible for an area that covers the main Medical Center and numerous Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOC's), Admin Buildings, Warehouses and Vet Centers covering the coast from Savannah to North Myrtle Beach.
Duties
The Interior Design Assistant provides interior design support including for the Ralph H. Johnson VAMC in Charleston, South Carolina.
Duties include but are not limited to:
Providing assistance to the Interior Designer in developing and maintaining the Commercial Healthcare Interior Design Program
Provides clerical and administrative support in the identification of client needs within interior design section.
Analyzes needs, proposes options, and develops specific solutions under the guidance of the Senior Interior Designer.
Act as a liaison, for the Senior Interior Designer at meetings, answering questions, giving opinions and taking action on matters involving Interior Design.
Provides advice, assistance and support to the Senior Interior Designer to improve program operations,
Present oral and written progress reports, and recommend changes as necessary.
Advises on all spaces involved in new construction projects from construction drawings.
Prepares preliminary space plans for proposed projects, including detailed specifications.
Works directly with VA Shops who support the services for electrical support, carpentry, plumbing, air conditioning, telephone and computer terminal locations, location of furniture and specifications for the fabrication of shelving, cabinetry, etc.
Prepares detailed estimates and requests for ordering interior materials/furnishings, such as furniture, window, floor and wall coverings, cubical curtains, shower curtains, artwork, lighting, paint materials, wall lockers, bulletin boards, etc.
Develops and maintains folders for all interior design items and materials.
Advises on specific areas of a building or medical facility such as the cafeteria or bathroom facilities, or a segment of the building furnishings, such as office furniture and architectural interior finishes.
Prepares preliminary space plans for proposed projects, according to commercial interior design codes such as ADA (American with Disabilities Act) , IBC (International Building Code) NFPA 101 (National Fire Protection).
Develops and maintains resource library of interior design information; possesses familiarity with commercial architectural fabrics, furniture and finishes.
Maintains the Interior Design files, which include drawings, specifications, budget, and cost accounting information.
Prepares the necessary visual aids, such as architectural drawings, sketches, renderings, color boards, and physical models for presentation of projects.
Work Schedule: 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM, Monday - Friday

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 03/05/2024.
Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-07 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-06. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. GS-1001-07 Interior Design Assistant:
Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-5 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Provide clerical and administrative support in the identification of client needs within interior design; Analyze needs, propose options, and develop specific solutions under the guidance of the Interior Designers; Act as a liaison for Interior Designers at meetings, answering questions, giving opinions and taking action on matters involving Interior Design; Provide advice, assistance and support to the Interior Designers to improve program operation; Make regular oral and written progress reports and will recommend changes as necessary; Prepare detailed requests for ordering interior materials/furnishings; Maintain folders for all interior design items and materials; Develop and maintain resource library of interior design information; Prepare the necessary visual aids, such as architectural drawings, sketches, renderings, color boards and physical models of presentation of projects to appropriate officials.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:
Knowledge typically gained through the completion of a four year degree program in Interior Design.
National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) certificate of proficiency (or preparing to take the exam)
Commercial Healthcare Design Experience
Demonstrated knowledge of NFPA 101 Fire Codes; ADA - American with Disabilities Act Guidelines and Requirements; ASTME Fire Code
ACAD computer drafting experience

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
Physical Requirements: The work is typically performed in an adequately lighted and climate controlled office and requires no special safety precautions. However, in construction areas the incumbent may be exposed to dust, debris, and some materials and processes peculiar to the construction sites. Some walking, inspecting, touring of construction sites and occasional travel may be required.
