Duties

As a Research Microbiologist, you will: Perform work that requires the practical application of basic microbiologic and virologic principles and knowledge of fundamental microbiological scientific concepts and terminology in order to conduct work with arboviruses. Perform classical virology techniques, such as virus growth in cell culture, plaque assays, neutralization tests, and antibody/antigen detection assays. Plan research efforts and organize the collection and reporting of data for assigned areas. Conduct experiments, analyze, and interpret resulting data, prepare reports, and co-author articles for publication in scientific journals.

Current or Former Political Appointees: Agencies must seek prior approval from the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) before they can appoint a current or recent political appointee to a competitive or non-political excepted service position at any level under the provisions of title 5, United States Code. Failure to disclose this information could result in disciplinary action including removal from Federal Service. Current or Former Political Appointees: Submit SF-50. Basic Qualifications: A. Degree: microbiology; or biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included at least 20 semester hours in microbiology and other subjects related to the study of microorganisms, and 20 semester hours in the physical and mathematical sciences combining course work in organic chemistry or biochemistry, physics, and college algebra, or their equivalent. OR B. Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Minimum Qualifications: To qualify at the GS-11 grade level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 grade level, which must include the following experience: producing and optimizing reagents for serological arbovirus diagnostic assays. OR Master's or equivalent graduate degree related to the work of the position being filled. OR A combination of specialized experience and graduate level education that meets 100% of the qualification requirements for this position. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
