This position is in the Dental Department at the Fort Thompson IHS Health Center. The primary purpose of this position is to manage and supervise the Dental Department in the health center and to provide professional dental care in connection with the diagnostic treatment of commonly encountered dental diseases or dental health problems requiring standard corrective, restorative, or preventive measures.
Duties
Provide direct dental care services of a scope, quality and quantity consistent with IHS, Great Plains Area and service unit policies.
Performs restoration and cavities with standard and prescribed materials. Administers local anesthesia. Perform single and multiple extractions of teeth and treats periodontal disease.
Establishes relationships with tribal groups, clinical staff and IHS personnel to facilitate(s) appropriate health care provisions.
Ensures that department expenditures, supplies and equipment are within allocated budget; ensures compliance with JCAHO or other accreditation requirements; and provides professional dental administrative activities for assessing planning and developing for dental services. Provides supervision to dental staff by assigning and evaluating work, interviews employees for positions, recommends appointment promotion or reassignment, resolves employee complaints, effects minor disciplinary measures such as warnings and reprimands and identifies training needs.

Basic Requirements for the Dental Officer Series 0680, GS-12:
Education: Applicants must have a Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) or Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree from a school approved by the American Dental Association (ADA) or the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (DOE) at the time the degree was obtained.
Licensure: Applicants must have passed the National Board Dental Examinations which are developed and administered by the Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations and possess a current, full, and unrestricted license to practice dentistry in a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.
GS-12 Level: In addition to the above 2 Basic Requirements, you must also meet one of the following additional requirements to be considered:
Your resume must demonstrate 2 years of Professional Dentistry experience and/or training. This experience is equivalent to at least the GS-11 in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector. Qualifying experience involves the evaluation, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases, injuries, and disorders of the oral cavity and maxillofacial area. Examples of dentistry experience may include the removal of decay; filling cavities; straightening, extracting, and repairing teeth; treating gum diseases; performing corrective surgery; making measurements/models for dentures to replace missing teeth, administering anesthetics, writing prescriptions.
OR
Provide proof of completion of a 2-year Residency Program in dentistry, oral health, craniofacial sciences, or a related medical science.
