Serve as an Orthopedic Health Technician at the Bruce W Carter Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
Duties
Major duties include but aren't limited to:
Apply all types of orthopedic castings on patients.
Order, stock, and manage supplies required for specific castings and ensures the availability of required items.
Provide patients with an appropriate explanation of the process and procedure to be performed.
Apply casts in complex cases.
Set up traction devices and checks them for utility, comfort and patient safety.
Assist radiology department in positioning patient for necessary x-rays.
Participate with attending and conduct patient rounds.
Instruct and supervise new residents as to technical aspects of plaster cast applications and temporary prosthesis.
Maintain the orthopedic clinic.
Maintain quarterly budget.
Work Schedule: 8:00 am-4:30 pm M-F

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 02/26/2024.
Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-06 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-05. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.
This occupational series has an Individual Occupational Requirement (IOR) which is a minimum qualification requirement. To be considered for the position, you must ensure that the experience is reflected in your resume and/or if applicable, transcripts must be uploaded to support education requirement or substitution.
Specialized Experience: Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled.

Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-05 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: apply and mold casts on patients; order, stock and manage supplies; set up traction devices; changing dressings; remove sutures; instruct and supervise new residents; perform consult management and manage workload according to shifting priorities; maintain orthopedic clinic including contract and purchase orders.

Physical Requirements: Regular and frequent walking, standing, stooping lifting, bending, stretching, pushing, turning and at times, carrying heavy loads. Incumbent must use good body mechanics.
