Duties

Assists IT specialists with the monitoring and operating of computer hardware and software systems. Operates most types of desktop systems and computers, such as, minicomputers, and laptops. Resolves error messages and operating problems related to computer hardware and inputs commands at computer terminals and peripheral devices. Enters commands and activate controls on computers and other equipment; monitor system errors or failures; recording and notifying the supervisor of equipment malfunctions. Responds to program errors by terminating or correcting routine problems; retrieve and sort program outputs; send data to users; load standard peripheral equipment; answer telephone calls to help computer users with problems. Organizes and maintains subject matter files and records related to the work of the desktop support, such as forms, records, and other materials. Performs a variety of general clerical office duties, such as word processing, filing, and creating spreadsheet reports, to support other organizations. Receives visitors and telephone calls, determine nature of requests and direct callers to appropriate staff; respond to requests for standard information or routine matters. Utilize organizational customer service processes and procedures.

Qualifications

This is a career development, excepted service appointment under the BLM Pathways Internship Program that is expected to last more than 1 year. The BLM will require the selected applicant to complete a Participant Agreement in which the selectee must provide an anticipated date for completing all degree program requirements, and show continual progression toward meeting the stated anticipated date. To be eligible for the Pathways Internship Program, an applicant must: Be at least 16 years of age. AND A student accepted for enrollment or enrolled in a degree or certificate program on a full- or half-time basis as defined by the school (certificate program means post-secondary education, in a qualifying educational institution, equivalent to at least one academic year of full-time study that is part of an accredited college-level, technical, trade, vocational, or business school curriculum);You must upload an unofficial copy of your transcripts. AND Enrollment is with a qualifying educational institution such as a high school or state-approved homeschool; or accredited technical or vocational school; a 2- or 4-year college or university; a graduate or professional school (e.g., law school, medical school); or a post-secondary home school curriculum. AND Students currently enrolled must be in good academic standing maintaining a 2.5 grade point average on a cumulative basis; You must upload an enrollment letter from your educational institution (Whether you are new or currently enrolled). AND You must continue to meet these eligibility requirements throughout the duration of your appointment under the Pathways Internship Program. In order to assess you meet a qualified status for this position and to refer you to the hiring manager, the agency must be able to determine that you meet the qualifications based on completed education (TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED). For GS-04: You must have completed 2 academic years of post-high school study or have an associate's degree (Note: You must provide copies of your transcripts). You must meet all eligibility and qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement. The agency may noncompetitively convert a Career/Indefinite Intern who is a U. S. citizen to a term or permanent appointment in the competitive service, as long as the Intern meets all agency program requirements and the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for the target occupational series at the time of completing all education requirements. CONVERSION ELIGIBILITY: Interns may be converted, without a break in service, to a term, career or career conditional appointment upon completion of program requirements. To be eligible for conversion, Interns must: Be a US Citizen Complete at least 640 hours of work experience acquired through the Internship Program Complete their degree or certificate requirements. Meet the qualification standards for the position to which the Intern will be converted. Meet agency-specific requirements as specified in the Participant's Agreement Perform their job successfully. CAUTION FOR STUDENTS IN THEIR FINAL YEAR: Students that are graduating and are not subsequently enrolled in another program might not meet the work-hour requirements prior to graduation and will be at risk for not being able to convert to a career or career-conditional appointment. Academic Year: At the undergraduate level, 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours is comparable to 1 year of undergraduate education. Four years of progressive study or 120 semester hours meets the degree requirements. At the graduate level, 18 semester hours or 27 quarter hours. This position has eligibility to be converted to a term or perm appointment in the competitive service. Interns must meet the qualification requirements for the position to which converted. Agencies may waive up to 320 of the required 640 hours of work for Interns who demonstrate high potential as evidenced by outstanding academic achievement and exceptional job performance. In addition, students working in agencies through third-party intern providers may count up to 320 of the hours they work toward the 640-hour requirement. Time spent under previous Internship Program appointments may count towards required work. If converted to a permanent or term appointment, the anticipated target position will be a full performance level up to a GS-11. The target position and full performance level may change based on the need of the organization at that time. Interns must meet the qualification requirements for the position to which converted.
